Chris Roberts, creator of those old-timey space shooter sims you loved in your youth, is coming back with a big bang. His new game, Star Citizen, has received $8 million in crowd funding is set to revitalise the genre he helped create. And it could be coming to the PlayStation 4.

A firm member of the master race, and a staunch PC adherent, Roberts told GI International that he thinks the PlayStation 4 is a “nice piece of hardware,” because it’s “essentially a PC.”

“The good news is that it’s essentially a PC, so that means PC owners will get much better ports of console games,” he said. “I’m not a PC elitist by any means; if I could be on the PS4, and they were open, and I could do the updating and all the sort of stuff we’re trying to do on Star Citizen, then I would definitely consider putting it on PS4, because it’s essentially a PC with a friendlier operating system.”

And while there are no plans just yet to bring Star citizen to Sony’s hussied-up PC, it’s something he’d certainly consider. Despite all things PC running in his blood, he’s quite optimistic about the future of consoles too.

“I think the console business will be healthy for quite a while, I think the PC business, the tablet business, the mobile business, they’ll all be healthy,” he said. “I think there’s money to be made in all of them. I just like the PC business because there aren’t a lot of people competing there.”

I sincerely hope that Star Citizen makes its intended splash, making space combat games viable again. If it doesn’t, there’s going to be a swarm of really angry kickstarter backers.

I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.

    ” a friendlier operating system”

If this is true, I won’t be a happy camper. I was holding out to upgrade my PC until SC was near release. This was truly the only PC exclusive that I was willing to fork out R 5000 (for the upgrade) to play. If this releases on PS4, I’ll get it for console. I really wanted an excuse to upgrade my PC, but I’d rather then use that extra money to buy games for the PS then.

Disclaimer: This is not a troll post and it is not the intention of the author to incite hatred or start a race war between the Master Race and console plebs.

Inb4 PC Master race – Yes I know by buying a PS4 I’m buying a PC and therefore I’m upgrading my old PC by buying a console thus PC still wins…huh?

What you said made a lot of sense and yes PC still wins…

I really love my PC and most of my favourite gaming memories are on PC, but the exclusives doesn’t justify the investment for me. If I had loads of money and even more free time, I’d play a lot more games on the PC. I’m not saying console gaming is cheaper, but one platform gaming is cheaper :) Some of the console exclusives (especially PS) I really look forward to and thus it seems I’ll be choosing a PS the next generation.

Disclaimer: The console exclusives referred to above, almost none of which has been announced, is my educated guess based on this generations exclusive franchises and console exclusive developer’s games. I reserve my right to change my opinion at any stage and without any notice.

I love my PC too but my PS3 is just more convenient.Pop the disc and play, no mucking about with settings or being stressed out about how long before I need to upgrade my hardware.

If you ever get a Playstation I highly recommend God of War 1 – 3. GOW Ascension is not necessary.

          • Spathi

Heh, no I have a PS and Xbox (had a Wii, played SMG 1 and 2 and sold it) and I play almost all my games on the PS currently.

With PSN+ and its great mediaplayer capabilities (damn you cinevia!!!) the PS truly is a great investment.

One of the biggest reasons I play more on my PS is that console gaming is more social than PC gaming. By saying that, I do not refer to multiplayer games, but rather to single player games. When playing games on a PC, it is USUALLY done in your room or study and on a screen no larger than 26″. It is perfect for one person. Console gaming is usually done in the living room on a 40″ TV where it is easier for someone else to “partake” in the gaming. Console games are also easier to use when people come to visit and you want to play a game like Fifa or Fight Night.

Disclaimer: My above opinion was formed on the what I perceive as the norm when it comes to PC and console gaming respectively. I have no stats to substantiate my opinion, other than what people that I know currently use.

I will stand by you with sabre raised and defend what you just said sir!

    • Trevor Davies

Why did you have to put a disclaimer? I was poised to spew hatred & bile & you just preempt it all. Very unsporting sir ;)

  • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

I cannot wait for this game!

  • Deon Steyn

All us console gamers want is to be closer to the master race. We can give you exclusives from the PS library and you can give us PC games.

    • CaptainNemo42

Oh, we console common folk will get us some awesome PC games, but Sony won’t be giving the master-racing nothing. Pigs will learn to fly before that happens.

  • Rincethis: Spellalicious

I just hope this comes to the Xbox with Kinetic 2.0, I want to be able to use my hands like I’m in a cockpit, and also I want to see how long it takes for Pizza Hut to deliver to the outskirts of Sol III and whether I’ll get it in under 30 minutes…

    • HvR

Are you sure your joystick is long enough for Kinectic 2 to pick it up?

      • Rincethis: Spellalicious

A good point, and definitely a no. Probably why my current girlfriend makes me happy after she’s been in the fridge for a few hours… wait, what 0_O

        • Trevor Davies

It’s true some batteries last longer when stored in the fridge :D

          • Rincethis: Beeralicious

            I meant… 0_O

    • Anon A Mouse

Geez I’m tired. I’ve actually laughed when I read you want to use your hands in a cockpit. I think my brain is reverting back to when I was 8.

      • Rincethis: Beeralicious

Mine’s been 8 for the past 26 years!

  • Purple_Dragon

I want more space games!!!! Wing Commander!

  • Dawith

    ” I

    competing there.”
    He has seen the light

  • Skoobaz

Will the new PS have a keyboard? All those Wing Commandery commands mapped to where?

  • Guest

Bloody console owners why the hell should consoles get this. Consoles are the reason games have been shit the last 6 years for pc players stick your six axis wii mote and kinect where the sun doesn’t shine and give me a full cockpit with 10 monitors I can nuts in!
