Square Enix underestimated FFXIV interest

There have been some birthing troubles with Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. Servers flooded and down, people unable to even purchase the game, let alone create characters – quite a mess. Now it turns out that it was due to “conservative estimates”.

Speaking to Polygon at PAX, director Naoki Yoshida explained that the team expected players to be wary of FFXIV after the issues with the previous version:

“Because of the rocky launch [of the 1.0 version] we were a little conservative in our estimates of what was going to happen with the second launch, because we thought people would be wary of that first launch and wait and see what the reaction was before coming in.”

“What actually happened was everyone decided to come and play at the beginning. That’s why we’ve had our server problems and issues with logging in. The development team’s been working on this for the past week 100 percent, and by Wednesday we hope to have servers implemented as well as several of those login issues relieved.”

Yoshida sees this as a sign that Square Enix has regained the trust of its players. He has been on a campaign to reconnect with players after the failures of the original FFXIV, saying that the company couldn’t be like the “Square Enix of the past”. Speaking openly about what went wrong with the original game, he believes:

“We wanted to be as open as possible with the players, because if you’re open with the players, that’s how you gain the trust and hide nothing. Tell them no lies. Once you do it, you see the results.”

Square Enix is doing massive updates and fixes on servers to try to get everything up and running by today. Additionally, they’re giving all registered players an extra week of free gameplay to compensate for the frustration faced by those trying to get into the game. Hmmm, I suppose I might as well give it another whirl. I really wouldn’t mind getting into Eorzea again and running around with my awesome character. I just wonder if I should keep my interest at a “conservative” level to match Square Enix’s expectations.

      • Hammersteyn

Now he can make one for FF

  • RinceThisandFINALLYlvUP!

Well, now Zoe has no hangover excuses to not test out the Beta…

  • Umar Final Fantasy 15 Hopeful

Well I guess this actually worked

  • Tarisma

No MMO launch is ever smooth, anyone remember how “terrible” the GW2 launch was?

    • Galbedir

Bought GW2 just under a week after release date, and have not had a single server/login issue since. 1 or 2 quests that bugged out, but as far as MMO launches go, I found it relatively hassle free. Also after Diablo 3 launch, any launch seems smooth to me :P

      • Tarisma

Ha ha there were a couple issues on the pre release weekend, and a few in the weeks after especially in WvW, but overall it was quite smooth but there were still the people saying how could Anet do this the launch isn’t working properly, etc etc.

Thing is you will always have people crying about launches

    • Kloki

Rubbish.GW2 had the smoothest mmo launch ever.Nothing like this nonsense.

    • Joey1013

LOL I never had one problem with GW2 launch. What problems?

  • OVG

Final Fantasy fans are like Diabllo fans. They would buy a brick if it had the LOGO slapped on it.

  • Decembermaloy

There was maintenance today, seems to have fixed the issue for the time being.
    Logging-in without any issues.

    “Tell them no lies”
    …servers finally fixed by Wednesday… it’s Wednesday… updates done… 1017 boss still undefeated.
I get my hopes up every freaking day that this game will redeem itself and every freaking day I’m let down and can’t even play 5 minutes – no matter what benchmark I wait for.
It’s nice they are giving a free extra week and that they stopped online sales for now to relieve the servers though. A company cutting into it’s immediate paycheck shows some integrity.

that so true too what it is is people loging in then not loging back out there take up a pretty major part of the world I think square should kick players who been idle for more then 2 hr that way other people can play oh an the 1017 boss is still ALIVE

You’re kinda 2 weeks late to the party and this is old news. Why are you wasting bandwidth by writing what others have written?Copy paste much?Lazy indeed.

    • Sargon

What are you on? Can you share it? Is it cheap? So you’re saying Lazygamer is lazy (lol – oblivious pun) because they copied (cite original source as evidence please) material that others have already written from two weeks ago? Um… did you bother reading the article? How is it possible, since they actively cite an announcement (and thus updates included since release went live) that only went live yesterday. Unless you went forward in time, then back in time, and then forward in time again, only to go back further in time… wait now my heads hurts. My point is, you’re lazy. Read the article. Journalists don’t just tell you the news once, they also try to keep you updated. The announcement was only made yesterday and the author here goes about highlighting important points since the original issue first started.
