Sorry, how many people have played Call of Duty?

While many of you question the franchises enduring quality, there’s no questioning that Call of Duty is one of – if not the biggest gaming franchise on the planet. Just how big is it though? According to Activision, very – and they’ve released a handy infographic detailing just how huge the shooter behemoth is.

And it’s big. According to Activision, more than a hundred million people have pew-pewed other people in the face; more than the populations of some of the world’s most populated countries. all of that equates to over 32 quadrillion digital shells spent.

The number of care packages called in – just since their inception in Modern Warfare 2 – would be enough to build 100 of the alright walls of China.

13-08-2013-15-57-54

Further to that – and this is actually a teeny, tiny bit depressing – is that the total number of hours people have played Call of Duty, all put together, is longer than all of human history.

Now you can moan about Call of Duty and copy and paste all you like – but there’s obviously something to it. And you can;t really blame COD for ruining games and the industry – that finger really should be pointed at lazy developers and publishers trying to do a “me too!” to capitalise on the franchise’s popularity.

The next Call of Duty, Ghosts, is coming to current and next-gen consoles along with the PC – and will release in November this year.

It’s like my McDonalds burger theory. It may sell a lot but it isn’t the best.

4 million cows for the patties
7 Amazon jungles for the lettuce
700 billion tomatoes (4 times the amount of Chihuahuas in the world)

Didn’t you hear about the whole pink slime saga.

They took all the “odds and ends” that normally goes into dog food, put it into a big centrifuge which spins off all the little piece of meat and fat which needs to be cleaned with bleach to kill the high amount of bacteria in it. The result is that pink slime, this comprises about 15% of the beef burger and more of teh nuggets.

I think they only did this in the US though.

The only thing you can really point at McDonalds for and applaud their structure is how well they’ve maneuvered to make all the things they sell (or pretty close to it) and in-house product. All the meat, produce etc… is all from in-house subsidiaries. So their costs are insanely low.

Other than that, horrible company, horrifying food, and you’d probably get more nutritional value from a steaming bowl of gruel.

Just because a lot of people are doing something doesnt make them or what they are doing right or any better than other people perceive it.
I can think of a few examples, but to avoid an inevitable backlash of tears if i do name some of them i will settle for hipsters and bieber fans.

      Everything popular is wrong.

Also my theory is that 85% of the world’s population is stupid and this is increasingly evident even without citing CoD as a contributing statistic

That information is factually incorrect. We currently consider our ancestry to span at least 6 – 7 million years (thus the term hominin for the human clade). This makes it clear that the guys and girls at CoD headquarters only consider our human ancestry to tie into the emergence of the Homo genus. Not so certain of this myself. Wikipedia they are using, perhaps? I now question the validity of all their other claims. How certain ARE we, really, that 31 billion care packages to could recreate 15 thousand great pyramids of Egypt? I am not impressed.

Pffft…Come on, be realistic, the Earth is only 6000 years old which means that humans have only been on Earth for less than 6000 years. Humanity didn’t evolve over millions of years from a common ancestor (that would be outrageous) they were created from dust and a rib. Have faith brother 8).

Of course I kid but but something I cannot kid about is that COD sucks compared to Quake!

Mmmm… the first problem I have is that they combined the sales totals for the recent Call of Duty games, which gives the false impression that 100 million people have played the games (so if you bought the last 4 or 5, you’re counted as 5 people). Why couldn’t they just post the highest sales of the most sold COD. That in itself is a very impressive number.

Or make the data more usable. In other words, normalise it per game, or even normalise it to cost.

Poor show Activision, lying through stats! Bad form. ol bean!

“And you can;t really blame COD for ruining games and the industry – that finger really should be pointed at lazy developers and publishers trying to do a “me too!” to capitalise on the franchise’s popularity.”

Gamer’s are just as culpable. Had they not bought into CoD hook line and sinker without a thought to the future of gaming, developers and publishers may not have been so quick to jump on the bandwagon. And had gamer’s done their due diligence, before buying into carbon copies of CoD, developers and publishers would’ve been further hesitant to jump on the bandwagon.

Companies exist to make money, and if we’re not smart enough to keep them in check with our buying practices, we’re just as responsible for the state of things, by not demanding more (as consumers should) and simply settling for what they put out there.
