Quick! Which is the top-selling HD console in the world right now? The safe guess would be to assume that it’s the Xbox 360; that’s what the media keeps saying and it did have that year-long head start. You might even be right – but not for long.
Sony’s announced that it’s reached a pretty significant milestone of 70 million PlayStation 3’s sold in the six years since its launch.
"Cumulative sales of the PlayStation 3 have reached a milestone of 70 million units worldwide as of 4 November 2012," the company confirmed in a statement.
Just weeks ago, Microsoft issued a similar statement, sating that they too have sold 70 million of their consoles – and that’s with an extra year on store shelves. Much of that has to do with brand loyalty. The 360 has performed pretty abysmally in Japan – and European game territories, including South Africa, have always favoured the PlayStation Brand.
Microsoft’s still the global leader when it comes to HD consoles, but it probably won;t be for too long, seeing as Sony’s whittled away that year head start to pretty much nothing.
In fact, If Sony didn’t completely duff up the second re-launch of their PlayStation 3 with that terribly overpriced Super Slim, they’d probably have the lead.
Oh, in the same statement, Sony’s said it’s managed – incredibly – to sell 15 million PlayStation Move units to date. That’s 15 million suckers who’re regretting that particular purchase.
And yes, I’m one of them.
