Sony will probably never make The Last Guardian

Missing last guardian

The Last Guardian has become a bit of a joke amongst gamers. It’s a symbol of games that are lost in development hell, games that people desperately want but disappear into the aether. While we’ve been continually assured that work on the game is ongoing, it appears that it may be taking a new form.

According to the USPTO, Sony has abandoned their trademark for The Last Guardian.

It was “abandoned because no Statement of Use or Extension Request timely filed after Notice of Allowance was issued.” The last “Extension of Time to File SOU” was filed by Sony on July 2, 2014, and it was the third of five such files.

There are only a few reasons why they would let the trademark lapse. In all the hullaballoo around Sony hacking and controversies, the person responsible may have simply forgotten to renew the trademark. Perhaps the project is still in development, but it’s getting a new name – this would make sense to get a new generation of gamers excited for it; all they need to do is hint that it used to be called The Last Guardian and the old school crowd will go wild anyway. Of course, the worst possible scenario is that it’s actually just cancelled.

I wonder if continuing with The Last Guardian is really worthwhile in its old form. The game has probably changed so much since it was originally announced that it might be worthwhile to give it a new name. Plus, with so much hype built around the game over the many many years, it’s probably just too much to live up to – the game needs to be cancelled or totally rebranded. Sony keeps reaffirming that the game is still in development, so presumably we will hear more in the coming weeks and months – perhaps it will be announced with a totally rebranded/renamed reveal at E3 this year.

This game makes me so MAD!!! It’s like that Ex GF you had when you were young teenager. You date for like a week, everything goes awesome, shit happens and you guys have to break up for some reason you forgot.

She says “Wait for me” just to reassure you its not the end.

    You wait…

    And wait…

    And wait…

Guess what, its like 7 years later and you’re still waiting!

You know what I say? I say screw that bitch and screw this game!!!

This could make you feel better… or worse, I don’t know 😛

“UPDATE 3 FEB 17 09:58: SCEE has confirmed to VideoGamer.com that The Last Guardian is still in development, but has yet to comment on the reason for the trademark’s cancellation.”

This is why they shouldn’t announce games early. We are all tired of hype trains. Delays upon delays with the same tired excuse “we want to make it the best we possibly can for the players”. Bullshit.

Plan properly, like professionals. Or don’t announce a game till its almost gold.

And can somebody tell me why the hell are digital prices the same as physical discs in boxes?????
