Sony is rolling in revenue from PS4 sales

I imagine this is what the Spny offices look like

Sony is currently enjoying a 64.6 percent increase in revenue to the tune of 441.8 billion yen or $4.35 billion dollars (USD) for the quarter ending December 31st last year, due to the launch of the PS4 in major markets.

Sony notes that exchange rates in their favour helped out with the large increase in revenue, which was offset by a “significant decrease” in PS3 sales at the end of its lifetime.

They also reported an operating income of $172 million dollars (USD) for the quarter, which is an increase of  $132 million dollars (USD) on last years quarter. The results are offset, however by the cost to produce the PS4. The operating income for the quarter also had a $59 million dollar (USD) write-off of, and I quote “certain PC titles sold by Sony Online Entertainment.” So it’s not entirely clear what PC titles they are referring to.

In the quarter ending September 31st, Sony had reported an $8 million dollar (USD) loss on account of the price reduction of the Vita and at the time unfavourable exchange rates, as well as a decrease in PS2 and PSP sales offset by a slight increase in PS3 sales.

It’s good to see Sony firmly in the black with the release of the PS4. With the release of a new console, it’s not hard for everything to go wrong. President and group CEO Andrew House said last September that SCE expects to ship 5 million PS4 units by the end of the current fiscal year.

thats because of the shady crap they do to themselves lol. when it gets so bad they know they have broke games and still release them and say theyll patch them later thats when people get mad enough to not support the industry anymore and switch to used games. throwing those online passes in there, dlc, i remember when dlc use to be things we got for free after beating the game and a new menu would unlock with extra content of the game and now we pay for it. dont feel bad for them because believe me they will never feel bad for what they do to us trying to squeeze every penny out of us. the head honchos in charge arent usually gamers they are investors and could care less about gaming they just care about how much they rake in. thats why games never get fixed. oh we ran out of time and couldnt fix it. they fix mp first and sp gets abandoned. dont even get me started on the train wreck twisted metal was

I totally get what you saying, but in a general manner its kinda sad how the gaming industry has turned out for the worse and they dont realize that they are they ones messing up this industry trying to monopolize everything they can get there hands on. At the end of the day we all suffer because of them and yes fair enough we can go down the used games route, but we also have this urge for new games, new ip as well. The industry has a lot of work to do in order to fix all the messups we currently seeing.

Sony, Microsoft, EA, Activision etc… are in it to make money, it’s gamer’s responsibility to keep them in check by not buying into the monetization strategies that they employ. Few have.

It’s not just the companies, gamer’s being completely oblivious to the harm that buying into this stuff can cause, has helped the industry to where it is today.

It is really unfortunate, because those people everyone loves to just shit on constantly (PC Gamer’s) did provide warnings about the direction the industry was going. Which is why it’s more important for gamer’s to be unified, then these idiotic little fifedoms we create for ourselves/allow the media to manipulate.

If we’re constantly at each other’s throats, they can get away with whatever they want. If we’re all working together, and talking about the state of things as a whole, it’s allot easier to identify the shady shit they pull.

Some PC gamers flame for fun and to annoy the console gamers and vice versa, but then you get those hardcore guys who take it so serious that it makes you wonder what benefit do they get from it? At the end of it all like the whole Microsoft always on DRM debacle…. the consumers stood together to get them to change things around. Like you said that we should stand and work together… thats what can help us change things indeed. Like the example i mentioned. Its only a pity that not all of us is willing to commit to this sort of thing.

            February 6, 2014 at 18:02

And console gamer’s don’t do this also? Cause I gotta tell ya, in the past month, I’ve seen at least 5 examples of unsolicited trolling to PC Gamer’s, by console gamer’s.

Take google+, for example. In the _Playstation_ community in the past week or so, there was some post trolling the ‘Glorious Master Race’, for no reason, just some random female gamer wanting to take a shot at PC’s (though, what she was trying to say was absolutely incorrect)

Look, there are trolls everywhere, PC, Console, TV, Telephone, Sports etc… you name it, they exist. To hold PC gamer’s to a higher standard than everyone else is..particularly strange, especially when many of those folks have been in the industry just as long as, or longer than many of us. Are they better gamer’s? Maybe…do any of us know for certain? Does it matter?

There’re better gamer’s than me on console, just as there are better gamer’s than me on PC. It doesn’t bother me, it’s reality. The other reality is this hobby/passion of ours is ruled by profit, which makes it fragile and prone to abuse. This bubble already popped in the 80’s, do we want to see it happen again?

We need to start listening to the folks pointing out serious concerns, rather than branding them with the PC Master Race, or what have you. And then start making changes to our buying habits so that companies actually SEE a result from them (preferably negative in the cases of things we don’t approve of).

Console gamers definitely do it as well hence why i said and vice versa. I agree with you that you get trolls everywhere and thats just how it will always as well. Being a PC gamer makes one a better game player? Not really. Whether console or PC there will always be someone better than the next. Thats just how it goes in life, but if we look deeper into this then we just going to miss the real point of it all. Having fun with playing these games.

Ill be honest. Majority of the games today isnt as fun as they were years back. There are very few gems out there that caught my attention for quite a while, but if i look at gaming as a whole… most of gaming has lost its soul due to monotonization. a couple of people would say that Indie developers are the only ones to create original and fun games most of the time which is in some cases true, but a lot of them arent that good either.

What im basically trying to say is that troll or not we play games to enjoy them or thats what i believe and im sure you do as well, but because of these corporations pumping out games with outstanding graphics… the gameplay and lastability of games as well as its ‘soul’ is mostly gone. Not sure if all this makes sense to you though lol there so much i could say, but my brain is half dead since im sitting at work trying to finish up so i can go home.

          • Brian Murphy

            February 6, 2014 at 18:21

Yeah, we need to simply ignore all the trolls, and continue on with the conversation as if they never existed. Just as we normally do. But, we also need to start listening more to each other, especially when people are pointing out how a ‘new’ strategy from company X or Y could potentially harm gaming in the future.

I’ve been saying for years that removing stand alone servers, admin tools, mods, and map making tools was a very very bad thing. I was constantly told that mods are lame, you have to wade through thousands just to find good ones…basically everyone tripping over themselves to tell me why I was wrong.

Come to find out, I was right. When they took all of that away, we now depend on those companies to keep their MP Servers running, we depend on them to police those servers, we depend on them for any kinds of DLC (Skins, weapons, vehicles, etc…). I won’t sit here and say every bit of modding I’ve seen, is awesome, because that’s not the case.

But, I’ve certainly seen some maps that were better than anything the developers made. I’ve seen some vehicles that were authentically replicated from the period, I’ve seen mods that actually make games tons better. And I’m pretty sure I’m better at policing my own server, than EA/Microsoft/Sony/Activision etc… are, of their own.

But, now we’re stuck in a very closed environment, at the whim of these remorseless juggernauts. Hopefully, in the future, we can prevent further harm from being inflicted on the industry. But, we have to be willing to say no, not gonna buy that, and the only way to do that is together. Not separated by the hardware that we choose to invest in.

          • CypherGate

            February 6, 2014 at 18:30

They purely restricted modding in most games because of the fact that the teams dedicated to modding WILL definitely come up with so much better ideas where even DLC is concerned, better maps, more varied vehicles as well and loads more. Even full campaigns as well. Ive seen some good mods out there and loads of bad ones, but its no more different than finding a bad game from a well known developer and finding a brilliant one from another.

Thats how it goes and look at free to play mobile games… LOADS of crap out there, but there are a few gems inbetween. One of the main ways these developers could have taken advantage of Modding communities is looking for fresh talent and ideas. If they see something brilliant.. why not consider employing them to better there gaming development? Modding brings mostly positivity to the gaming world than most things out there. Lots of people dont always realize that because they too focused on the crap mods you see. I mean great example of a great couple mods are Crysis 1 and GTA4. Brilliant mods out there.

As you say in your last paragraph: “hopefully we can prevent further harm from being inflicted on the industry, but we have to be willing to say, not gonna buy that” Thats what we need to do. In the end we the ones with the power. They need our money and we give it to them WAY too easily.

This last gen I was actually fairly encouraged by Media Molecule, because they hired a guy who created some amazing things for Little Big Planet. But, that was pretty much the exception, as it turned out. They’ve closed the industry down so much, it’s difficult for developers to see the work that some people are capable of.

          • CypherGate

            February 6, 2014 at 18:41

The industry now is a lot more controlled than before. Maybe the Indie scene will pick to an extent that it will even rival the mainstream gaming companies? Something similar to the way GranTurismo and Forza franchises are. They dominate there respective consoles without real innovation or interest, but once Project cars hits both consoles and steal the show only then they will actually decide to better those franchises. If there is no real competition then there is no real drive for a company to push the boundries.

I think thats what is happening as well. House hold brands know they dominate the space, but until great developers like in the indie scene rises up and threatens there space. Only then they will really start to take note cause all our money would go to them cause they would simply be better.

you gotta take into a account when you read things like this or a any company like cars for example when they say they have a loss, it doesnt mean a loss really. it just means they didnt make as much profit as they estimated or as much profit as they usually get. they dont ever really lose money. so when they say a loss of 8 million dollars they really didnt lose 8 million, they just didnt gain 8 million on top of the profit they already gained but they still made a tremendous amount. they always try to throw loss in there

The PS4 was developed with a completely different paradigm to the PS3.
The PS3 had a custom processor that Sony partly developed.
The PS4 uses a PC system on a chip.
As a result the PS4 is significantly cheaper to develop.(Pity the Rand has effectively died, otherwise we would have a console that would be cheaper than the PS3).

No, the emotion engine was the CPU designed for the PS2 that the PS3 originally had on it’s PCB w/ the PS3’s Cell/XDR etc. I use the emotion engine still, to this day on my fat 60g for backwards compatibility. 🙂

As far as recouping dev costs, I’m not sure they did, actually. They had a massive fortune built up after the PS2, then the financial crash hit, then they released the PS3 to a crippled economy and people simply couldn’t justify spending the money.

Catastrophe after catastrophe in the asian region didn’t help them either, the earthquake/tsunami that bashed the eff outta Japan etc… I’m sure the PS3 era is a time Sony would like to forget at this point.

Just a pity it’s such an abysmally bad piece of kit. Well, for anything other than playing games that is. Mine sits alongside my PC only getting turned on occasionally to check if the system update that will allow media streaming, and therefore for it to replace my noisy-assed PS3 in the lounge, gets released. Might actually just sell the expensive door-stop instead. Launch games aren’t exactly compelling after all, and apart from gaming it’s 100% useless. Except for War Thunder perhaps, but even it works much better on my PC, as does ACIV and NFS Rivals. Don’t get the point, and also don’t get why the gaming media hasn’t made a stink about how insanely unfinished and hurried a product the PS4 really is.
