Sony: Harassment or bullying “completely unacceptable”

Bullied

They say that those who are bullied often become bullies themselves. This isn’t just something that we see on the playground anymore – it’s getting played out on a grand scale on the internet. While no one can define GamerGate clearly enough to pick a side, Sony can at least make one unequivocal statement.

Sony Computer Entertainment America boss, Shawn Layden, told Games Industry that while the industry as a whole had spoken via the ESA, he could make one statement:

I don’t think there is one statement or one position on it, or one answer to whatever this very broadly-defined #GamerGate really means. A lot of things are getting swept into that. I’ll be very clear about my view of harassment or bullying. It’s completely unacceptable. Completely unacceptable. I will not be vague or equivocate about that.

Layden went on to say that Sony is best in class, or close to it, at ensuring women are in leadership positions in the corporation. He cites a range of examples of women in top positions, saying how being representative is part of the company plan.

I’m glad that Sony was able to come out in this regard. There has been far too much bullying and harassment on both sides of GamerGate and regardless of your views, there are better ways to express yourself. Bullying in all forms is becoming so prolific, it makes me sad that companies have to actually come out and say that they condemn this kind of behavior – shouldn’t we all condemn it as a society?

Unfortunately WE don’t have as big a voice as they do. But it usually helps to just ignore it, or talk about something else. So… how about this weather we’ve been having?

Let’s not forget the sleeping your way to publicity. Sleeping your way for support to harass, undermine and divert publicity in your favour.

Agree with this a million times over. Too often we see the Politically Correct person chosen over person most suited for the job.
