Sony aiming the PS3 at families next year

The PlayStation 3 is a core games machine for core gamers. At least it is right now. Though it has its fair share of family oriented games, it’s managed to shirk off being labelled as a kiddies machine.

That may change next year, as it seems Sony plans to focus on families and younger gamers in 2012.

"You will probably see us taking the console more towards a slightly younger demographic – more family market," Sony’s European leader Jim Ryan told OPM"…there’s some quite interesting stuff happening in a number of areas, which would allow us to open up a market that we accessed pretty successfully on PS1 and PS2, but we haven’t yet got to on PS3."

Those would be family-friendly PlayStation 2 favourites like Buzz and Singstar.

"If you look back at the history on PS1/PS2, the vast majority of the business that we did on both those platforms was done at sub-£129 price points," said Ryan. "We only just got to £199 in the UK a couple of months back, so you can see … there’s still a lot of PS3s potentially to be sold."

Don’t worry though, core gamers – just because Sony’s changing focus – much like Microsoft did with Kinect, that doesn’t mean you’ll be ignored.

"The core gamer will absolutely not be neglected," he said. "There’s going to be tons and tons of great stuff for the core gamer from our own studios, third parties.”

I think it’s safe to say we’ll be seeing a lot more PlayStation Move next year – and the only hope is that it’s implemented well, and not just used for tacked-on waggle purely for waggle’s sake.
