Shadow of the Eternals developers will not give up

Dennis Dyack and the remains of Silicon Knights took to Kickstarter to fund their sequel to Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem. At first, they failed, but now, they’ve really failed. But that doesn’t mean it’s the end for them!

Time ran out on the Kickstarter clock over the weekend. Despite receiving 5 932 contributions amounting to $323 950, they fell well short of the $750 000 goal. But this doesn’t mean that Precursor Games has given up on the title. After thanking everyone from Reverb to AMD to Crytek, they went on to say:

It is unfortunate that we were unable to crowd-fund this project at this time, but we have not given up. We intend to pursue other avenues with the ultimate goal of having our games come to fruition.

Look, it’s great to believe in your project and stand by your art. However, it does say something when no one is willing to fund it. Precursor showed off the game, promoted the Kickstarter, and it flopped, twice. If other publishers are unwilling to fund it, and the masses are unwilling to throw money at it, maybe there just isn’t a demand for the game. Maybe they should try to get the IP for Eternal Darkness and do a remaster – if people played the original it might drum up some support for the sequel.

Or maybe they should move on and try to make a different game.

Sad though, I really miss psychological horror games, why did the horror genre drop so badly over the years

Indeed. Or even a game that just messes with your mind like Silent Hill …. Sadly another genre losing to mindless shooters

You’re not alone. Shooters are taking over. the best of all awards are shooters. Launch titles are big shooters….sigh 🙁

It’s like the rugby players in high school getting all the attention regardless of how shallow and dumb they are, all over again.

Well let’s hope they are like those high school rugby players as they reach their peak very early. I just hope shooters start to fade out and dilute into something else

lol The industry measurement these days. How would a planning session for a game go down?

Game designer : “Hey I got this cool idea for a game…*goes on to explain the game* ”
Greedy Publisher : “What BS is this!! Your game is not COD enough. Add more COD to your game!!”

There’s a kickstarter for a horror game called U55, the trailer actually gave me a fright, so I’m keeping an eye on it so long.

What in the hell is happening to the gaming industry? If it’s not Indies crying for equality it’s a new Kickstarter every week?! Have we been too accepting and lenient towards these guys that they’re expecting too much now? Soon Indies will demand selling their games at full AAA title prices and Kickstarters will demand Indies giving them that extra money! If you have a good game or game idea people will buy it and publishers will publish/invest in it! Indies, your games a cute but you’re not equal! Kickstartes, go to the Bank and get a proper loan like everybody else!

I fully support indie games, but I pay indie prices for them. They have a long way to go before they get to where the AAA titles are and if their games are good, as you said, then people will buy them.

No love lost for Indies here, but here’s my Kickstarter: Going to make a cheap ass console with a huge HDD, sell it with a monthly sub of $10 and for that you can download every and all Indie games for free! I’ll take $3 per sub and the rest gets divided between Indies based on downloads!

i sorta agree – very happy to pay 3 dallah for the humble bundle. that said, some of those indie games were so incredible, i’d happily throw more money at them after the fact. maybe even a whole $15!

Look, some of my favourite games are indie games. Take FTL, I CANNOT stress enough how cool it is. And got it for $2.50. happy as can be

Some indie games are good enough to justify a higher price tag, I mean hell, some apparently AAA titles like GRID2 isn’t even worth $4.

Indies aren’t crying for equality nor are all indies associated to Kickstarter expecting so MUCH from us. Does Tim Scheifer fall under the indie Umbrella too now because he took to Kickstarter? and it’s quite degrading to pass indie games as ‘cute’ … Some of the best games to come out this gen has been indie, I would rather support indie than these greedy AAA companies

Dennis Dyack got a lot of negative press around his name, not sure what the whole story was. Their first effort was $1.5mil to fund an episodic game – screw that, nobody was interested. Then their second effort happened around the same time Double Fine had their epic Broken Age screw up – that probably didn’t help either.

Plus as a side note: Just because a game is on Kickstarter or called indie, doesn’t mean it’s (potentially) any good, or interesting to a large number of people. A crappy game idea is still crappy no matter what the funding level.

I agree, I’ve spent money on a few AAA titles that I wish I never had. But I think the lack of hype around some indie games ends up leaving you with no expectations and then some of those gems really surprise you.

True, me too. I just get annoyed when you have some twit jumping up & down about how indie he is & somehow expects everyone must throw money at him because of that, meanwhile his game is average at best.

Probably codes on a Mac, eh Zoe 😛 trollol
