Shadow of Mordor DLC worthwhile?

The first wave of DLC is going to come crashing down on Mordor later this year. The Season Pass didn’t win me over when we first heard about it, but now there’s a trailer and more details – plus I loved the game. So has the DLC impressed me yet? Um, not really.

Here is the video showing off more DLC content, particularly for first DLC: Lord of the Hunt (which can also be viewed here if you don’t have YouTube access).

The new features are:

  • New Story & Lore — Discover more tales from Torvin, the Dwarven Hunter, as you work together to tame the beasts of Mordor and fight Sauron’s minions
  • New Missions & Challenges — New Beast Hunting challenges and collectibles open up new trophies and achievements
  • New Nemeses — Face off against the Beastmaster Warchiefs, powerful new Uruks who have the ability to ride monsters and engage in perilous mounted combat
  • New Monsters — Ride into battle on the Wretched Graug to vomit toxin at your foes, stalk your enemies on the predatory Caragath and attack from the shadows or raise an all-consuming Ghul Horde
  • New Epic Runes — Make your Mount unstoppable with five new epic Runes that make you the ultimate hunter
  • Test of the Wild — Test your skills against the Beastmasters and mount your trophies on the leaderboard
  • New Character Skin — Lord of the Hunt skin transform Talion into the ultimate Beastmaster

While I really liked Torvin’s character, I found the hunting missions to be the least compelling of all the story missions. Sure, I’d love to just spend more time with Torvin, but I’m not sure it’s worth it to hunt down the Wretched Graug who vomits toxins onto its enemies. A giant puking monster? That seems so overdone these days. I’m sure it will be cool, and I like the idea of all new Beatmaster Warchiefs, but I’m just not sure that it will add anything new to the gameplay. I’d rather see more story missions that explain more of what was happening and who the characters are. While the feature list claimed that there’s more story and lore, it sounds like more of Torvin’s silly stories and random beast hunting.

After the game seemed to innovate and offer so much, the DLC just feels like it’s falling flat. While I would happily use it as an excuse to jump back into Mordor, I’m just not convinced that the DLC is worthwhile. Am I just moaning about nothing, or are you also questioning the value of this extra content?

Vote with your wallets people. Tell Warner Bros to shove it.

Honestly, I’ll probably pick it up on special when the GOTY or Game + Season Pass bundle goes on sale.

Yeah pretty much what I am waiting for… Also Game Of The Year has lost all meaning in the past few years. Code for “Oh here is the whole game you wanted from the start.”

Yeah pretty much. It’s rather a sad tale, but a true one nonetheless.

Buy on special, I’d say. Not full price.

I think they should take note from bungie and Destiny how DLC is done adding content that will keep you busy for minimum a month expanding on the universe and story adding more gamplay!! For that I will gladly pay for any DLC if I like the game but for cosmetic bullcrap and like two quests that I will finish in an hour no thanks

Its total bullshit. The reason why Geoff kept saying that this game just seems to be missing something is because these greedy fcuk heads cut most of it out so the moron gamer zombie presses PURCHASE.

After the DLC being the main priority over patches for the last broken Batman game I expect nothing less.

I agree dude, I actually enjoyed the game sooo much but this is just half-assed bullshit man story was weak as it is oh wonder why bcuz they held back some of it for the stupid DLC’s. I have bough season pass before for AC4 and Watchdogs and never again am I buying Season Passes again just not worth it all they do is add some cosmetic skins and crap. Bought one for Destiny but I know that one will be well worth it!! My personal opnion if you want to add DLC add a new campaign with bunch of new story and content but not a month after the game is released come one that should have been part of the game

My grandpa used to tell me stories about stuff like that, he called them “expansion packs”. Crazy old man, he used to talk to the tree too.

Expansion packs in the old sense is gone. Now we’re stuck with buying parts of the game that was meant to be in release.

EXPANSION PACKS, Installs, CODES, KEYS, Updates…

Now I remember why I stayed the hell away from PCs since 1988.
Now it seems the PC is the simpler option.

Expansion packs were great. You bought a game, you played it for over a year, loving it, and then they bring out these great packs that lengthen the story, add almost just as much content as the original and you get to enjoy your game for another year with a new spin.
I remember getting Total Annihilation and then Battle Tactics and then Core Contingency. Both those added SO much. Units, maps, story, gameplay teaks. They tried to enhance the experience, give you something more.
Now they REMOVE, sell it back to you. Or they ask the same price as they used to for expansions and what you get is two new guns and a fresh pair of slacks.

The console option of just pressing START was to attractive to me.

Power On, (Blow, wiggle, eject, blow, blow, wiggle wiggle, BASH) PRESS START

            Sigh… the good old days.

Oh I get that. I completely agree. When I got my PS3 and I had to install things I was a bit like… http://www.writeraccess.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/78486334.jpg
The size of games these days make it understandable for the installs though, but they’ve just fallen too far from what people want from consoles and why they prefer it over pc.

It at the point of no return. It will not be long before only the Elite have access to the full game.

The all-consuming Ghul Horde sounds pretty interesting, the rest seems pretty meh however.

Always wondered when I looked at Captain and Warchief weaknesses; why there was a fear of ghuls?

There’s hardly ever ghuls around in free-roam. Not once did I have a chance to exploit that particular weakness and now I see why… sneaky DLC pre-coded whack bullcrap that’s only effective now that the DLC is coming.

The gameplay of Shadow of Mordor is so repetitive. My god it’s so repetitive. But at least they made that repetition fun. But as it stands, no more money should be spent on Shadow of Mordor. What ever you spent on the game was already too much.

Don’t spend anymore money on Shadow of Mordor.

I do feel like I have to agree with you. It is quite repetitive. It’s great fun, make no mistake, but it’s nothing ground breaking or unique here.

The game doesn’t have much replayability imo so I don’t really see the value of the DLC, it feels too much like more of the same.

Everyone here on Lazygamer seems to get it. The publishers/developers aren’t even shy with this anymore. They’ve obviously been working on these dlc’s since before the game was released. I bought the game fully aware that I wouldn’t be able to get any of this and that there will be a game of the century hyper ultimate edition.

I wish we could get a game like Dragon Age: Inquisition with Shadow of Mordor’s combat. That would be the most epic adventure ever. Armor customization, story, and everything included. I know it would be tough to make seeing as how one is an RPG and the other is Action… but it would be the best game ever..
