SEGA denies Aliens Outsourcing

Yesterday reviews of Gearbox’s Aliens: Colonial Marines went live (including ours) and the game is pretty much an absolute mess; poor AI, bad animation, out-dated graphics and a terrible story are just some of its failings. Some, including an ex developer, want us to believe Gearbox is absolved – because they essentially sub-contracted the game out to TimeGate Studios to handle the games multiplayer instead. Publisher SEGA says that’s nonsense.

According to SEGA’s senior producer, Matthew J. Powers, that story – which might help explain why Colonial Marines is so damned terrible – just doesn’t ring true. An ex-developer on the project says that the game’s single player was essentially outsourced to Section 8 devs TimeGate and that Gearbox was handling multiplayer, but Powers says responsibility for the travesty should rest entirely on Gearboxes shoulders.

“Absolutely not, the game has been developed by Gearbox Software,” he told PlayNews (via DSOGaming) “Other studios [like Timegate] helped Gearbox on the production of single and multiplayer.”

To what level did other studio’s “help,” I wonder? Not that it matters – regardless of who actually developed it, it’s an awful, awful game – and I’ll certainly be looking at future Gearbox titles with an extra dash of caution.

Aliens: Colonial Marines was released yesterday for PC, Ps3 and Xbox 360 and currently sits with a Metacritic average of 47%.

Wether outsourced or not, blame goes with Gearbox. It was their baby, and it is apparently a screw-up of note. Shame on them!

Got the game yesterday hoping I could look past all the flaws and find some enjoyment. Ended up standing against a wall and repeatedly blowing myself up with grenades.

Was the grenading yourself at least fun?

Was trying to wake myself up from the nightmare.
Strangely enjoyable when you try and figure out the physics and bouncing the grenade off the surroundings.

I feel sorry for you. This is really a sad day for Aliens franchise…Gearbox should not make FPS games anymore, someone should remove their FPS Developer’s Card.

Did you have issues with a bug with the end boss? I read a few other peoples reviews that did. Said they would have finished it in 4 hours if not for the shitty glitches.

A bloody travesty. Gearbox should be ashamed. I am so upset, I am going to hurt this kitten. That’s on your Gearbox, that’s on you…

Dude, and the kitten is a Scottish Fold too. I have one. They are quite timid as a breed, BUT when pushed into a corner, they can and do fight and fight hard, just like all other cats. Alien is in trouble.

I fear Gearbox has underestimate what the cat can do… I mean, I am just their (bloody) agent. They have forced me to do this to said Scottish Fold. This, yes, THIS is what happens when you make a game that smells worse than Darryn after a nacho eating contest. Shudders*

Yeah, but as a serious cat lover and fan of different and varied cat breeds, I still back the cat. The cat has deception and speed on its size, like a mongoose against a snake. The snake has to be lucky once to win, but nine times out of ten, is not that lucky.

This is true. And the fact that WE KNOW the AI of this Alien is very suspect probably adds to the favour of this cat.

Gearbox should learn to stop developing games that were started developement by someone else.

Codemasters did a similar mess up with Body Count and Operation Flashpoint so they just stuck to making racing games after that.
