Ryse on the Xbox One isn’t even 1080p

Ryse

Yesterday, Darryn told you that Ryse, Crytek’s game of digital gladiators ran at a native 1080p. He lied. It’s not his fault though, he took the word of Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg as gospel. What he didn’t see was a follow up by Greenberg clarifying the matter.

In a follow-up Tweet, Greenberg actually admitted that while yes, turn 10’s Forza 5 was 1080p, Ryse was running natively at 900p. He did, however, mention that just like the 360, the Xbox One up-scales everything to 1080p.

So yes, Ryse runs at 30fps at a resolution of 1600×900, 44% fewer pixels than 1080p – which any PC gamer will tell you is just not at all impressive, and not the sort of things we’d expect of “next gen.” Still, whatever the resolution, Ryse does look pretty incredible close up, though the lack of 1080p native resolution could indeed be indicative of a weaker console.

Gees how much of a let down is that? They claim these consoles are so powerful etc etc but it cant even run there games at 1080p? I get Forza 5 will be doing it, but I wonder why cant Ryse do it as well? Guess the consoles isnt as next gen as they all claiming it to be. Im still pumped for these consoles though.

Lol i definitely agree with you on that one. I was in a way convinced it would be proper next gen, but the more you hear about the actual real time specifications of these games it just ends up being more and more disappointing.

Give it 4 years but for now we can choose games like Assassins Creed and The Watchmen for this gen or go next gen if you want more people.

I do not remember many Hybrids of PS2 PS3 games but I suppose the jump from last gen to this gen was massive.

Thats also true if you look at current gen and next gen that there is quite a massive jump. I just thought considering that the current gen lasted so many years that the next gen tech would be a lot better in terms of running full 1080p at 30 or mostly 60fps with no issues.

Then again it comes down to the developers themselves who should work towards 60fps right? These consoles should be easier to work on so reaching 60fps shouldn’t be a massive hurdle.

I hope so. I have to admit that I have become fussy after seeing and feeling how lovely COD plays against MW. It is a very small difference yet it feels so much more responsive.

I just wish Farcry 3 was giving the silky smooth frame rate. But I suppose it is mainly the 1st party games that have the money to do that.

Yeah and after our talk i just came to the conclusion that at the end of the day… money talks. If you have the cash then it can be done. Far Cry 3 deserved the smooth frame rates for such an epic game.

My pc I built two years ago is better than these consoles lol. A lot better in fact. It is very dissapointing I thought for sure they could at least top my pc by a little bit.

720p was just a bit low imo. Details like power cables in the distance etc caused some visual issues. In my opinion, anything 1600 x 900 and more is fine if it means more detail and higher frame rate. Few modern console games really render @ 720p anyways, and most still look great. I don’t expect all next gen games to run @ true 1080p, and I’m fine with that.

What they should never do in my opinion, like with Far Cry 3, is allow a game to run @ crappy frame rate to boost visual quality….

Indeed bro. Frame Drops can seriously turn me against a game. I couldn’t play Dead Rising 2 on console, my eyes are so used to smooth frames that any drop is very apparent…well let’s hope this will be fixed next gen

As long as it looks decent, what does it matter? Think people are getting far too carried away by the numbers without noticing the end result of said numbers.

You are right, but when we were all promised that Native 1080p was the only way to play games 6 years ago (I suppose to sell the SONY Bravia) we all have a sour taste left in our mouths from all the lies.

I even got two jobs and it still was not enough 🙁

You can have 1080p but leaving out things like AA will just make the game look like crap.

Resolution does not make a game make.

I prefer 1080p with no AA over 720, 900 etc with AA to be honest. I feel the 1080 does a better job at getting rid of jaggys than lower resolutions do with AA enabled.

But that’s just my personal opinion

I’m just hoping this is because of little development time with the new hardware. But if this is a more definite sign that these new consoles cant even do 1080p at 30fps then how on earth do they expect the consoles to last 7 plus years.

I understand the technical side why games like Forza 5 can do 1080p 60fps and more open enviroment games can’t. But at the bare minimum hardware must enable all games to run 1080p 30fps.

Very excited for next gen but news like this just puts a damper on everything…

Here’s the issue. Less than 1080p on a PC screen is not such a huge issue. Very subtle and not so noticeable difference. But i can tell you that ever since I moved my PC on to my TV the difference is like day and night.

My TV is 42 inch, and I sit a “reasonable” distance from it. Based on freely available online optimal distance calculators, I can perceive 900p but anything above is wasted on me, so 900p with MSAA would look identical to 1080p with MSAA in my setup. I don’t think I’m in the minority here either… not many people have absolutely massive TVs in a small room. Detail, framerate, resolution: pick any two (or in the case of some miserable JRPGs, pick any zero…Star Ocean IV, anyone?)

I thought it was only platform agnostic titles that would run at 30 FPS with 1920 x 1080 resolution on the PS4 and “20-something” FPS with 1600 x 900 resolution on the Xbox One. Now it appears that even titles developed specifically for the Xbox One only get 1600 x 900? Ouch.

Interesting how this works. Ryse looked gorgeous to folks when it was thought to be native 1080p, (when its been actually running @ 900p all along). Now its crap. Funny how the mind works.

1080p vs 900p upscaled with quality hardware scaler is pretty much unnoticeable, specially with moving picture (i.e. a game or video). Just take few screenshots froma game with good quality AA in 1600×900 and 1920×1080, then upscale the 1600×900 in e.g. Photoshop using any of the bicubic algorhitms.
Still, sensationalisim aside it is a 31% reduction over 1080p in terms of raw pixel count, or around 17% in either dimension. As a side note, 1080p has 44% more pixels over 900p but 900p has 31% less than 1080p so the the writer can’t handle even basic mathematics (whether he can give any objective or analytical insight on the visual fidelity of 900p vs. 1080p is another question)
