We’re being spoilt for choice this year when it comes to fighting games, with the majority of those titles hitting us in the first quarter of this year already. We’ve already had the excellent Soul Calibur V and UFC Undisputed 3, with Street Fighter X Tekken hitting shelves later this week, followed by Naruto: This game has an added title that is too damn long.

It’s a resurgence of the genre that has really exploded with quality in the last three years, with numerous other iconic franchises, such as Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, having made a successful return.

But one such beloved game that has yet to make a return, is Darkstalkers, that supernatural-themed fighting game that achieved a cult status with fans, with the last core game being seen back in 1998, followed by a well-received PSP game in 2005.

But it looks like we might finally get to pit shapely succubae and vampires in an all-out brawl against one another in the near future.

An inside source at VentureBeat claims that Capcom is busy putting together an official sequel, Darkstalkers 4, and has roped in help from Street Fighter 4 producer Yoshinori Ono, who has been head of development since his work on Street Fighter X Tekken began to cool down last year.

Apparently, Capcom will use a new version of the engine powering Street Fighter X Tekken, which they feel is the greatest piece of software that the publisher and developer has ever created.

It really has been a long time coming for Darkstalkers, as a renewed interest in fighting games has opened up doorways for a sequel that would have been met with doubt and stiff resistance, were it not for the current renaissance going on at the moment within the genre.
