Last year Rod Fergusson left Epic games after a long and glittering career and quickly joined Irrational Games, the people behind Bioshock: Infinite. A few weeks after joining the title was delayed as we were told Rod had let them know the game simply isn’t ready to out.

And now a few months later and with Bioshock: Infinite garnering awards all over the place we find out that Rod Fergusson is on his way out again.

However according to Rod this was always the plan, in an email to Polygon Rod has stated the following

During my departure from Epic, I learned that Irrational was in need of a ‘closer’ to help finish BioShock Infinite, I’ve been striving for better storytelling in the games I’ve worked on and I saw this as a great opportunity to learn from Ken and his team on how to build a truly story-driven game

He continues

I am very proud of the work that I did and of the team and what they were able to accomplish on Infinite. Now with the game shipped successfully, I’ve done what I set out to do here and now I’m looking forward to the next chapter in my life and career.

Personally I think it’s a great move from Rod, the chance of Irrational releasing a better game than Bioshock: Infinite as their next title is pretty slim so it’s a good time to move on and look for the next great title to beef up that CV.

I personally wouldn’t be surprised to see him end up at the same office as Cliff Bleszinski in the near future.

I wonder if CliffyB has found his mojo yet, and whether he’s still trying to find himself, or “charting a new career” path.

Bless his socks, I think he has the right idea, rather then retiring when you’re ancient and in need of a new hip or a new heart valve, rather retire when you can still appreciate the freedom.

Heh. I can see this guy making a professional career out of being a “closer” for games.
    1) Go to company
    2) Help close game
    3) ???
    4) Profit!

Sometimes you need a guy who can kick open the barndoor, unleash the whip of productivity and give the peasants a royal lashing…

      Rod… is that guy.
