Rock Band 4 is coming–and it works with your old instruments

RB4

As we’ve been guessing for some time now, Rock Band 4 is indeed a thing. It’s coming later this year for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 – and will come with a whole new bacth of plastic instruments. Fret not (ha!) if you’ve already got a stack of faux instruments though – your old ones will work just fine. you’ll be able to use your PS3 instruments on your PS4, and your Xbox 360 ones on your Xbox One. You’ll also be able to import your entire library of songs – with the game supporting 2,168 previously released tracks.

“After taking some time off, it was really interesting to kind of come back and play the games that we bled and sweat over for years and years and years. Two things emerged very quickly: One was ‘holy motherf***, these games are FUN!’ Project manager Daniel Sussman at Harmonx told Eurogamer.

“At the same time we were able to be quite critical of the work that we had done and saw lots of room for improvement. And that was really important to us as well because we are all creative people and it was important for us to be able to sink our teeth into to something that was deserving of the 4 at the end of the title. We didn’t just want to rehash Rock Band 3 for new consoles. We felt it was really important for us to evolve the gameplay in a way that would be interesting.”

Yes, I’m pretty damned excited. I love the hell out of Rock Band – and I\m glad the rhytm music genre is making a comeback. Unfortunately, all my plastic peripherals are for the Xbox 360 – so I’m going to need to get that Xbox One.

Pity there won’t be another Guitar Hero. That was fun.

Is it though? I only played Guitar Hero, so I can’t compare. If true, great!

        What makes it better?

Ok. Here’s the deal. Harmonix actually made the first two Guitar Hero Games with Red Octane providing the instruments. they really, really understand music – with many of their staff in bands. They left after that, and made Rock Band, while Activision carried on, using Neversoft to develop Guitar Hero.

I find – personally (though many agree) – that Guitar Hero is more difficult, with extra notes added in for shits and giggles, where Harmonix’s note tracking is much more in tune with the song you’re actually playing – so it just feels better. And it really does.

In short: Guitar Hero feels like an arcade game, Rock Band feels like a music game.

            Thankee…

I always loved Guitar Hero. Will give this a try and see how it compares. Was hoping it’d be more difficult though…

rock bands saving grace was its price, i picked up rock band 3 for like, R50 or something dumb, if you are a guitar hero/band hero fan, you may find rock band… less exciting.

rock band felt slow and sluggish, even on highest difficulties it didnt provide anywhere near the challenge that guitar hero did.

i didnt find rock band to be better at tracking, contrary, i found it worse, trcking was less accurate, combinations werent as interesting or fun, the rthym in general felt off.

guitar hero did feel arcadey, especially the older ones, perhaps less so with their band hero titles, but rock band felt no more musical than band hero.

I liked both Guitar Hero and Rock Band, but they’re both kids-stuff compared to Rocksmith. Sure it’s more advanced, but you can still introduce newbie friends to it and have fun without too much of a learning curve. Playing on a real instrument really makes a huge difference.
And the Jam session mode is the closest thing plebs like us can get to being rock gods 🙂
