Rift news: layoffs and free trials

More layoffs! Trion Worlds, developers of the MMORPG Rift (my current favourite activity!) have laid off as much as a third of their dev team. Fortunately they have announced some awesome news, former account holders can try the expansion, Storm Legion for free.

The layoffs

The industry has seen its fair share of layoffs this year, big and small studios have suffered despite the amazing games they’ve created. As a result, we all has a sad, most of the layoffs however was a result of not having enough cash money to pay employees.

According to Gamasutra an affected source had told them that “the number of developers out of work today — developers spanning several disciplines, including artists and designers — numbers somewhere in the neighborhood of 40.” The layoffs happened on Tuesday. Trion Worlds have confirmed the layoffs saying that it was in response to “market conditions, product timelines and the natural evolution of our company,”

Try the Rift Expansion for free

Trion announced that former subscribers of the game can try the expansion, Storm Legion for free with no restrictions. Rift Lite players (players with trial accounts) will also be able to celebrate the huge new Fae Yule event and build in private or public, personal or guild Dimensions. Fae Yule is the yearly festive season event, it’s really something!
