Respawn insulted that you think Titanfall buzz is bought

Titanfall’s beta is now unfortunately over. Most of those who managed to play the game while it was in open testing thought it was a wild ride, and understand the hype behind the game. Many others don’t – and think that EA and Respawn’s Titanfall positive press is the result of money changing hands. This notion, says Titanfall producer Drew McCoy, is insulting.

Speaking frankly on NeoGAF, McCoy wasn’t at all coy about insinuations that Respawn and EA were shelling out cash for the hype.

Anyone who thinks we weren’t living in the shadow of decade+ old established franchises at our reveal at E3 are as crazy as their conspiracy theories of anyone getting paid off. We’ve had to fight tooth and nail to have a game that anyone would even know existed, let alone be excited for and want to create coverage of. I get it that its not for everyone, but to say we’re paying anyone off is downright insanity. Not to mention the height of insulting.

This is something I understand. I got in to this job because I’m genuinely passionate about games – and sometimes, objective as we try remain, that enthusiasm bubbles over. As somebody who’s not exactly drawn to stale competitive, online multiplayer shooters Titanfall feels like a breath of fresh air. And I certainly haven’t been paid a cent to endorse it. I’m not sure my enthusiasm will last for too long though, because it is still a shooter, but I enjoyed my time with the beta immensely.

I do still wish the game had some sort of single player; there’s all this lore and backstory, that you only get mere snippets of, and I think A single player campaign along the the lines of the one in Tribes: Vengeance would work; it’s essentially the multiplayer game, only with with AI and a narrative. Respawn is a relatively small studio though, and I understand why they’re focused on just making the best multiplayer game they can.

In the same thread, McCoy detailed the fixes coming to the Xbox One version following the beta, as well as information on the 360 port, which he says is coming along nicely.

Oh, and for all the speculation going on about the 360 version. Its coming along really well, Bluepoint is full of phenomenally talented devs. We (being Respawn) have been pushing for them to have all the time they need to make it as good as possible, which means extra time for them to polish it up. We’d all like it to be day and date, but a better game a few weeks later is better than an unfinished one earlier.

I didn’t realize you were so cheap Geoff.
Please tell me it’s at least 1 cent per positive review rather than 1 cent for everything?

And minus a cent for every spelling error, reduces the legitimacy of the article. Now you’re poor again. 😛

I played the beta last night and my first thought was this is going to be meh. But damn! It is really intense! Especially when the titans start joining the party! The only thing I don’t like is the bots, they should remove them.

I also played a beta and managed to get to level 14 which is max. Look its a really well polished game but it is at the end of the day a replica of COD with mechs. The movement and game play feels exactly like COD the only difference is the futuristic setting and there is mechs.

Its a fun game regardless but not something I would buy.

They greatest feeling is when you as a pilot take down a Titan. I would imagine that’s how David felt after taking down Goliath.

I wouldn’t remove the bots (as once you start to try and dismiss them, you suddenly find yourself getting shot at by Spectres and mobbed by Grunts because you forget they were there plus a hacked gang of Spectres in tow like having your own squad) and I don’t think the Smart Pistol needs removing, just tweaking (drop the magazine cap by one, increase the reload time and increase the lock-on timer by 25% – that way you have to stay still (and therefore exposed) for longer and need more and slower reloads after you’ve given your position away.

Thought the Beta was incredible fun and can’t wait until second week of March!

Those are actually great ideas, just increase reload time by 25%. Well done. Holy crap I totally forgat I could cloak! No wonder I was being killed and didn’t see anyone.

Well it’s just a thought, and I’m really no expert, but I may well post it on the Beta forum and see what happens. And the cloak doesn’t help that much when somebody uses the Smart Pistol on you, because it can lock on anyway – Stim is far more useful as you move too fast for them to get a clean shot when running to and from cover.

I played it yesterday…now most people here will know that I am not a huge fan of the Xbox One becuase of its lack of support in SA (NOT SAYING ITS A BAD CONSOLE), and I think we can all agree that EA suck in general. In fact, if it werent for my beloved Bioware, I would not support a single product of theirs.
But MY DAMN, Titanfall is SO. DAMN. GOOD. If EA/ Microsoft build on the beta test and acually sell off a completed game (not just the same beta with 2 more maps) this REALLY WILL BE THE NEXT BIG THING. Havent had so much fun on a FPS since MW1……..

Just a thought, if it is so much like COD won’t in turn become another COD? I mean Call of duty was good for many years and then became what it is today, imagine if this happens with Titanfall. An arena filled with high pitched voices and cursing that makes sailors blush, this it what worries me about anything similar to COD.

I have a theory that EA rushed Respawn to get the game out becuase of the XBox’s slower than expected sales. And this meant so SP. Why? Well look at the gameplay trailers from last year, the one official trailer was basically a SP mission.
How does this tie in to what you said? WELL…….what if EA release DLC for an SP campaign?

Definitive statement – no microtransactions. They have the perfect mechanism if they wanted to do it (burn cards), but it’s something that Respawn have been dead set against from day one. DLC is different, and will definitely make an appearance, but it remains to be seen what it will consist of and how good the value is.

I jammed it in the last couple of days as many of you here did, and quite frankly even in beta form it seems to be more “finished” than the likes of cod ghosts and bf4, so it’s not running on the latest next gen engine and it has not got the history of cod, who cares it’s more playable and probably the only hope for a semi decent fps atm. Some people reported that is just another fps….i’v got only one question to those peeps wtf do you expect from an fps….it’s the same genre it’s always gonna be similar to other fps games out there…..get over yourself and simply enjoy it for what it is…..fun!
