Last week at CES 2012, we saw Razer unveil their prototype for a gaming tablet, Project Fiona. And honestly, it’s not the prettiest piece of hardware the company has ever pumped out before.

But that’s besides the point, as Fiona represents something else that we see too little of in the industry. It’s represents risk and chance-taking, something that Razer feels not enough PC giants are doing today.

“Why is it that the giants of the PC industry have stopped innovating and taking risks?” Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan asked Kotaku at CES.

The PC giants have stopped innovating and we’ve been left carrying a very small flag. I’m sick and tired of it. I wish they would do something about it. I wish we could do something together.

Even as these companies continue to shy away from what we do I have their CEO’s coming up to me and saying, ‘Man you guys have got some balls.’ We were just given 50 million dollars for research and development, so we’re clearly not alone in our fight to bring innovation to this industry.

Tan then went on to talk about Razer and the love/hate relationship the gaming community had with the company. “We don’t say PC gaming is not dead simply because we’ve unveiled a handful of new products”, Tan said.

“We say PC gaming is not dead because as long as we’re around, we’ll keep it alive any way we can. This is what we’re passionate about. This is what we do”. But more risk means more competition, right? According to Tan, it’s something that Razer would actually welcome into the market, explaining that it would actually lower the prices of products.

“It doesn’t matter, because we’d still do it better,” Tan said about possible competition. Personally, I’m not the biggest fan when it comes to Razer products, but I am a fan of the attitude the company has towards designing and marketing their gear, and it’ is something that we need to see more of in other companies.

Let’s hope that we eventually do get to see some more competition emerge in the future.
