Racist Afrikaans language pack to stay in Minecraft for now Popular
   January 30th, 2012 clock image 10:30 am

MineCraftAfrikaans

It really is depressing to see this sort of childish idiocy still exists in 2012 but unfortunately with so many idiots on the planet I don’t expect racism to disappear anytime soon.

I mean that would imply you’d have to take responsibility for some of the worlds problems yourself instead of blaming whichever other race you share the city with.

But it’s even more depressing when racism is linked to South Africa and gaming at the same time.

Some ignorant fool thought it would be funny to edit the Afrikaans language pack for the next Minecraft build and instead of translating the simple words into Afrikaans they decided to rather have a button return the statement

You are a NIGGER

I can only imagine it was an American who did that and a idiotic one at that as the vast majority of people who’d turn on the Afrikaans language pack would be white but hey Afrikaaans / African you can see how they may have gotten themselves a little confused.

This little nugget is unfortunately going to be in the latest build of Minecraft for a little while after the developers confirmed that since it was a snapshot build it isn’t applicable for patching unless it’s a game ruining issue.

Personally I don’t see why they don’t check the source history to see who checked this in and then name and shame.

Rumour: Assassins Creed 3 to be set during the American Revolution

  • JS

Yup, can only be some dumb American. Suig my groot toon ouboet…

  • Van Wyk Louw

Some “dumb American”, huh? That’s a baseless, racist comment in itself, okes.

    • http://www.lazygamer.net Gavin Mannion

No it’s Xenophobic not racist and isn’t baseless as the word Nigger
is predominantly used in America and the use of such a word makes you dumb (IMO), but it’s not that bad some of my best friends are American.. or know an American. that counts right?

      • Van Wyk Louw

“In British law the phrase racial group means “any group of people who are defined by reference to their race, colour, nationality (including citizenship) or ethnic or national origin” -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racism#Legal However you want to dice definitions, the knee-jerk reaction in this article inferring that the N-word is unique to Americans and that they’re the only people using it is baseless, inaccurate, and discriminatory (thus placing a question mark on the tone of this article itself). Virtually all english-speaking people in the world have been exposed to the use of this word and what its meaning. Heck, ask any Afrikaans-speaking South African :P

        • http://twitter.com/JimLenoir James Lenoir

          But, we’re not British :P

However if you read the law in its entirety, they refer to homogeneous communities where ethnicity and nationality mean the same thing. For instance, the Japanese or the Chinese (even though within those groups distinct ethnic groups exist). “American” doesn’t just mean white anglo saxon, but it also means Hispanic, African american, Italian american, or any of the other ethnicities that are incorporated into that nationality.

Also strictly speaking, racism depends on a strict power dynamic, that depends on views of inferiority and superiority. The term you’re looking for is “bigotry”.

        • http://www.lazygamer.net Gavin Mannion

predominantly = Mainly, for the most part. Very different from uniquely. I also didn’t think the tone of this article was up for question, it’s a disgusting degrading thing to do that has no place in 2012. Apologies if I didn’t make that abundantly clear. I’m always amazed at the logic behind people picking holes in something to try discredit the main point. If you know it’s not an American please feel free to provide that evidence :)

          • Van Wyk Louw

Likewise on the provision of evidence. I’m not, by any means, trying to discredit the main point. I’m just suggesting that a small edit from “it was an American!” to “it was an arsehole!” would have changed the tone of the article from “Racism is bad! I hate Americans!” (pot calling kettle black) to “Racism is bad! I hate arseholes!” (a resounding “fck yeah” from all involved).

        • Eric Viljoen

British aren’t really the world experts in the definitions of racism dude. I think you need to look a bit closer to home.

Nationality shouldn’t be included on the list. The other opinions are correct here. There is already a word that describes it: Xenophobia. Only place where I can see nationality as a “race” is if you talk about someone who is Chinese or Korean, as there are differences between orientals, and you can’t call them Asians, for it would include places like India and Russia as well.

          • Van Wyk Louw

I’d be happy to argue the point all day long. Even James Lenoir made the point that racism can absolutely be applied to references of nationality. He correctly mentions that in many homogeneous communities, nationality and race is one and the same thing, and that one carries a suggestion of the other. If I mention Nigerians, Kenyans, or the Portuguese, you no doubt have in mind a general clue of the general ethnicity of people I’m referring to.
Racism has long since been a far more complex discriminatory factor than simply ethnicity. However, we digress from the main point here. I’m quite happy to let that go since my original view stands, so let’s just say the author made use of xenophobic, or more accurately, bigoted rhetoric in an article that’s meant to highlight the injustice of racism. I hope there’s at least one other person here who can see the irony.

          • http://www.lazygamer.net Gavin Mannion

It’s true I have jumped to an unfounded conclusion here and it wouldn’t be proved beyond a shadow of a doubt in court but the evidence strongly points in one direction due to the common usage of the language in that country and the high amount of active developer and computer users there.

This is just one idiot who doesn’t represent an entire country though

          • Anonymous

“This is just one idiot who doesn’t represent an entire country though”

Now that would’ve been a far better way of putting it.

    • http://twitter.com/JimLenoir James Lenoir

American isn’t a race, bud. It’s a nationality therefore the statement can’t be racist.  My two cents!

  • JS

My bad, lemme make a crappy language pack instead to make my racist thoughts be heard.

  • John

I honestly have no idea why someone would even consider something that would ruin a great kid friendly game like MC. But I guess it’s a case of “once a douche, always a douche.”

  • Henk Roux

    He’s a crash helmet…

  • http://twitter.com/JimLenoir James Lenoir

Wow, I thought it was an Afrikaans language pack with racist Afrikaans words. I think that would have made me sadder than an emo teenager.

Instead, we get “you are a nigger” which, leaves me shaking my head, at the stupidity out there.  If you still think that all Africans (those born in Africa) are black, then you might need to remove that Klu Klux klan hood, because clearly the lack of oxygen is fucking up your brain.

    • Eric Viljoen

In all honesty. I did not expect “You are a nigger” when I read it was an Afrikaans language pack with racism in it.

  • Anonymous

“But it’s even more depressing when racism is linked to South Africa”

Yes, being honest about your countries history can be depressing.  I mean, there’s never been a single example of White on Black hate in the entire history of South Africa, so naturally, it has to be an American who did this. America isn’t perfect, nor is it’s history perfect, but I can’t say that we avoid the truth of our history either.

    • http://www.lazygamer.net Gavin Mannion

It’s a stretch to try and imply I’m trying to hide from South Africa’s history here. You’d have to be an absolute idiot to try and ignore apartheid and all the ills that have come from it. That is why it’s depressing to see this happen and be linked back to SA again, it’s not like we’re not trying to fix the wrongs of the past here.

I’m also not entirely sure America is that happy to discuss it’s past on all counts, smallpox blankets jump to mind.. we all have a sordid past of one sort or the other (English – concentration camps) and this article wasn’t trying to avoid any of that

      • Anonymous

It’s just as big a stretch to try and assert all American’s are responsible for or accept the racism that exists in this country.  Personally Gavin, I could care less what you’re trying to do there, when you make such statements, because it makes you the worst kind of hypocrite.  Oh, so you can do it in SA, but we’re beyond hope in America, is that what you’re saying?  Wow…so many words come to mind right now, I’m betting you can guess the two that come immediately to mind though.  Think real hard.

Yes, I learned about Smallpox blankets IN HIGH SCHOOL.  Even though my ancestry had absolutely NOTHING to do with ANY of it.  We’re ALL reminded of the shameful history that America was built upon growing up.  Do you have any idea how many THOUSANDS of families have come to America SINCE slavery?  Since the American Indian’s were wiped out?  Japanese camps during WW2?  Any thoughts at all on that?  Or just because we live here, we’re all just as likely to be involved in such things?

I’m done talking about this, I’ve made my point, I respect this site….for the most part.  But the assumptions you folks seem to make about where I live are as disgusting as the pasts of BOTH our countries.

        • http://www.lazygamer.net Gavin Mannion

I didn’t imply he was American because he was racist but rather because he used a common American racial slur in a European based language file.

American’s are no more or less racist than any other society I’ve had the pleasure of meeting.

I’m implying it’s an American because of the language and the content and the lack of knowledge around a small language that is only prevalent on the bottom of Africa and not something the vast majority of Americans would know.

Which implies it’s not someone from around here as the context doesn’t make sense and the language points to America.

I’m sure I’ve said this quite a few times already now. At worst I’m implying American’s are dumb (which is a common stereotype) but at no time am I implying Americans in general are racist, all countries are racist.

As I said at the end of the article, Minecraft should name and shame this person and then either I’d look like a fool for guessing wrong or you’d have to admit that maybe the evidence and interpretation of that evidence was spot on?

Worst of all, the Afrikaans translation in 1.1 was fine.
