PS4 is leading because Sony “listened to developers”

Leading

Right now, the PlayStation 4 is the darling of the console world. Gamers love it, developers love it and the very vocal people on the internet love it. It’s certainly starting to look like the PS4 is going to be the lead platform this generation. Not just in game development, but in game sales too. It’s because Sony listened to developers, says Sony, patting themselves on the back.

Speaking to Gamespot, Sony’s Fergal Gara  said that “never was a truer word spoken” than when PS4 lead designer Mark Cerny said that Sony had “spent five years listening to game developers, listening to what they want from the next-generation device”.

“It is as simple as that. [PlayStation 4] is much easier to develop for, and it is performing and packing the punch that developers want,” Gara said.

“We came up with the right product at the right price, for the right core audience to get us off to a strong start. We think we’ve done that very, very well,” he said.

“But that’s not the whole job. A strong start is invaluable, but it definitely isn’t the whole job. At this stage in the PlayStation 3 life cycle versus Xbox 360, we hadn’t even launched. We were 16 months behind.

“A lot can be achieved – million of consoles can be achieved – despite a poor start, and we certainly had that the last time around.”

In somewhat related news, the UK’s ChartTrack has revealed that sales of the current top-selling game in the UK, Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, that sales are quite heavily skewed towards the PlayStation 4 version of the game. They reveal that the game – which has knocked FIFA off the top spot – has sold 69% of its tally on the PS4, and a significantly lower 31% on the Xbox One.

In South Africa, of course, it’s skewed a little differently. The Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition sales are 100% on the PS4.

As a PC gamer, I firmly believe the Pee-ES4 is the superior hardware to the EierDoos1.

    No jokes.

I also think that in the long run, it will be MUCH more successful than the MS counterpart

Indeed. But you have to be an idiot to assume that controller will beat mouse and keyboard for FPS (when used by people with the same level of skill)

          • CypherGate

            February 4, 2014 at 09:08

Nah there i agree with you. Mouse and keyboard will always be the best at FPS. Nothing can compare to it. FPS and a game controller stinks. I will never be able to play an FPS on a controller. If there was a keyboard an mouse solely for fps’s on console then id play Halo etc etc, but i dodge those games because I just simply cant play FPS on controller. A controller only has a certain degree of movement whereas a mouse you have no limit on movement, can adjust sensitivity etc etc

I was in the same boat. Then one day, for shits and giggles, I decided to force myself to learn to play FPS with a controller. It was agony at first, then something clicked and I started to really enjoy it, actually became quite competent. Naturally, after a few months I went back to mouse & keys and I found that my skill had improved across the board. Guess what I’m saying is it’s useful to be able to use different input methods, the skills are transferable, strangely enough. And the worst that can happen is you’ll appreciate your favourite device even more. 😛

Im all for trying and being a jack of all trades. I mean i even tried Modern Combat on my phone (Xperia Z1) and it wasnt too bad once you get the hang of it. I remembered i tried Modern Combat on my HTC One X way back and well… I couldnt play it well because the phone got so hot it started burning my fingers lol My finger tips were quite red afterwards (This was from playing 30mins only lol) I dont game much on my phone for these types of reasons as well, but what im basically saying is that i like to try and even practice various ways of gaming, but when it comes to wanting to just play and enjoy a game without having to practice a new type of control then id stick to what i know for that time being ^_^

Quick question, so the XOne seems to be falling behind mainly because it has the DDR3 ram, but as it is actually built on PC type architecture couldn’t they just start making them with DDR5 Ram and maybe a tweak here and there. So that all future games still run on all XOne consoles but will run better on the new edition. They could call it the XBox One point One.

Imagine all the people who bought the original Xbone then.. They would go up in arms saying they spent so much and now they have to pay all over again to get the experience while the shiny ps4 needed no upgrade whatsoever.. would never work. unless they do a total recall somehow or “bring your Xbone in and pay minimal charge to get the Xbone 1.1”

I doubt they’d do that. They’d have to swallow their ego & basically admit to making a design mistake, many of the people who’ve already bought one would probably freak out, there’d have to be more time spent on dev work optimisation because of different versions of the console, and it would make the console even more expensive.

Not sure, you can get 32GB DIMMs but most mobo’s only support 8GB ones, usually with 4 slots max, so the most you can have generally is 32GB. and that’s pretty pointless anyway unless you’re doing stuff like video or photo editing that’s VERY memory intensive.

No, actually, the real problem is the ESRAM. It’s actual size is taking up space on die, that Sony instead used for the extra graphical oomph (shaders, texture mapping units, render output units and asynchronous compute engines).

The issue with the RAM is it creates a bottleneck because the amount is so tiny (32mb), the overall performance disparity resides in the APU, however.

I’ve been a big proponent of the 360 all it’s life-cycle – it’s been my go-to console of ‘last-gen’. But the PS4 has changed that for me for this cycle (and it ain’t because it got here first).

I mean, according to reviews, the XB1 is a home theatre that apparently doesn’t support PAL
60Hz blu-rays very well… Really? And it’s supposed to be the main attraction of your living room?! So yeah, (and I’ll probably be vilified for this by some) me thinks the XB1AMERICA (as it should be known) will be the ‘lesser’ of the 2 consoles for some time to come (perhaps even the entire ‘new-gen’ life cycle).

But, of course, only time will tell.

Sony’s approach with the PS4 “listened to developers” is better than the PS3 “get a second job” approach and so much better than Microsoft’s “TV remote” approach.

It’s funny how Microsoft’s TV approach still doesn’t have games playing at TV resolution.
