PS Vita digital games will be cheaper than retail Getting There

PSVita

Sony learned a hard lesson with the PSP Go and that is that the world, and retailers, aren’t ready for an entirely digital future.

However that doesn’t mean the idea is a complete bust and it looks like Sony has learned another valuable lesson from the PSP Go, people despise paying full price for a digital download, there is no manufacturing process and therefore we should be seeing a discount.

Thankfully this lesson has stuck and it has now been confirmed that PS Vita games downloaded in Japan and America will all include a 10% discount over their retail versions.

You will also receive this same 10% discount if you purchase a PS Vita code from a retailer so retailers aren’t being shut out this time.

All in all it’s a good move by Sony and one that I’m sure will also exist in Europe and locally upon launch, is it enough to make the PS Vita a valid candidate to replace my iPhone as my gaming platform of choice?

No.. that will only happen if the games make it worthwhile.

“..is it enough to make the PS Vita a valid candidate to replace my iPhone as my gaming platform of choice?”I know people are comparing mobile and handheld gaming but in truth, they are not even close. Mobile gaming is for when you are bored. Handheld gaming is for proper console games on a handheld. There is no such thing as a AAA mobile game, while there are AAA handeld games. When taking into account that a game like Uncharted is retailing for R 399 new, without the 10% discount, for which you get a full blown excellent quality title, with the fact that the Vita + PS3 will do what the Wii-U is promising to do in 11 months time, I don’t get why people are worried? You use a HUGELY overpriced cellphone as a gaming device so price can’t be the concern. You could buy two 3G Vitas and their memory cards for the same price a a iPhone 4S.

Never thought about the iphone as a gaming device. Also never thought about the price of the phone when arguing against it as a viable gaming device over a 3DS or PSVita.

The iphone is totally over-priced, and not even the fact that you can make phone-calls with it is a good enough argument compared to the price of a PSVita.

i agree that mobile and handheld shouldn’t neccessarily be put in the same category.

but the fact is, the majority of the time, the use case is the same. You have a moment to kill. You have a console in your pocket, so you jam for a bit.

the recent generation of smartphones are more or less on par with what the PSP is capable of, so it is a fair comparision (despite the lack of buttons).

I think the big advantage of smartphones is the fact that you might forget to pack your Vita in your manbag, but you’ll always have your smartphone in your pocket!

    10% isn’t good enough!

Right now in SA, place like Incredible Connection/CNA and Look and Listen will sell at RRP. But places like takealot/kalahari and BT are often already 10% less than RRP.

We need more like a 40-50% discount for digital to be a viable alternative to physical media. (Especially when with physical media, we can share with friends)

10%? If you pre-order a non-special edition you get the games for R499. RRP at retailers is still stuck in 2010 selling games at R599 on release. I just ordered SSX for R499 at takealot.com. They also also advertise Kingdoms of Amalur at R499 and it includes a nine weapon pack. The pricee usually go up by R40 or R50 after the first week.

If Sony plans on selling digital content at 10% lower. Great, but it has to be 10% cheaper then what I can get anywhere else.

Agreed, hopefully the online retailers will have 10% off their price for the digital copy, then gaming for the Vita will eb very affordable!

Yeah. I think the device might become a very viable option near the end of the year.
