PlayStation Plus shows how its done. Again

We told you that US-based PlayStation Plus subscribers would be getting the pretty damned good shooter BioShock Infinite next month for free as part of their subscriptions. You also know that indie scare-fest Outlast was also the free game for PlayStation 4 owners. Neither of those were explicitly confirmed for EU regions. they have been now…but there’s more.

Sony’s confirmed via the European PlayStation Blog that only do subscribers get those two games, they also get the pretty darned awesome Metro: Last Light as well. On top of that, PlayStation Vita owners get Modnation Racers: Road Trip (which is, frankly, a very poor man’s Mario Kart) and Dynasty Warriors Next, which I could skip as well.

You’ll be getting your new games on January 29th on the older platforms, and February 5th on PS4. Remember though, that leaves you with little time to make sure you’ve downloaded all of January’s games.  If you have a Vita, make sure to get Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed. Yes, it’s a Mario Kart clone too, but it’s actually rather damned good, and better than Mod Nation i just about every way.

BioShock Infinite, as you know, is the third game in the series, and is a mind-bending shooter with a fantastic setting in the sky. I’m one f those people who enjoyed it, but found it a tad overrated; the “smart” gameplay from BioShock and system shock devolved into being a pure shooter, and I saw the ending coming from a mile away, so its impact was lessened.

Metro: Last Light, sequel to Metro 2033 was also great – even though it also took a few steps back from its predecessor. It’s far easier than 2033, though still rich with atmosphere. Make sure to play it in Russian with English sub-titles for the best experience.

Continuing its Indiestation label, the PS4 gets indie survival horror Outlast. I can’t recommend this game enough though; it’s polished, it’s intense, and it’s flipping frightening. It may not have the budget of AAA, so some models and environments won’t blow you away, but it’s been made by a bunch of people with experience making games like Prince of Persia, Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell and Uncharted.

In summary:

Leaving PS Plus

29th January: DmC Devil May Cry
29th January: Remember Me
29th January: Sonic and Allstars Racing Transformed
29th January: Blazblue Continuum Shift Extend
29th January: GTA Liberty City Stories PSP
5th February: Don’t Starve
5th February: RESOGUN

Entering PS Plus

29th January: Metro Last Light
29th January: BioShock Infinite
29th January: Dynasty Warriors Next
29th January: ModNation Racers: Road Trip
5th February: Outlast

Once again, Sony shows how its done. Yes, Microsoft stepped up recently by actually offering a proper game for the Xbox 360 in the way of the fantastic Sleeping Dogs, but with PlayStation Plus, there’s something great for everyone. Every single month. For the price of one new game per year. It still blows my mind – but it does leave me worrying that people are buying fewer games as a result.

If you have a PlayStation system, internet access and enough bandwidth, there’s really no excuse not to have PlayStation Plus.

Is this the future? Will the decision of which games are offered free ultimately decide the fate of not only those specific game developers but also the specific console? Why not make PSN and Live Gold R2000 a year and never pay for a game ever again? Or let the subscribers vote on what games they want for free?

Games that leave PS+ is still part of your library if you purchased it and you don’t have to download it straight away. I’m a bit confused why the remove the games in the first place though.

I’m still buying a game maybe two every month. I have already played Bioshock and Metro last year. It’s almost like they make titles available that were a hit to begin with.

I think I figured it out. They’ve already made most of the sales they were going to make. We all know that game sales take a sharp dive a month or two after the release of the game. This is basically to get you to play the game, enjoy it and maybe get the DLC…

Take Borderlands 2 for an example, I didn’t enjoy the first one that much for some reason, I started playing it coop with friends and I’m loving it. Even considering the DLC down the line.

It also keeps the multiplayer alive for the paying customers, and in that sense it’s a win-win for all involved.

But this is the first time that I’ve heard about “leaving PS+”. Are all games just there for a limited time? And lets say I got DMC (the one that is leaving), can I then not play it anymore next month? Or can I play it as long as I got the game on the console or how does it work?

If you enter now, you can only download the games that are currently on rotations – so you’d be able to get the games that are there now – none of the games that were previously on. If you had plus, and “purchased” any of the free games over the past while, they’d be in your download list, waiting to be downloaded and played whenever.

Also, for long as you have an active subscription, you’ll be able to play all the games you’ve purchased, even if they are not currently on rotation. If your subscription ends, you can’t play them until you have resubscribed. Any discounts you get through PSN+ is obviously not affected by your subscription ending.

I understand the PS3 controller issue – I am a big racing fan and it sucked using the L2/R2 triggers. BUT got me some grips and it truly is the best thing I did….R50 or so. Hell got 2 different ones to see what I liked (both work). Works just as nicely for FPS games.

However, the PS4 controller, if you wondering is MILES ahead of the PS3 one. It just works!

Another tip: If you don’t have a PS4 yet, you can go to the website and “buy” the PS4 games so that you already own them when they go out of rotation. So when you do have a PS4 you’ll already own those games.

(Going to the PS Store from a PS3 only shows you PS3/Vita games, so you need to use the website to accept the PS4 freebies)

Aren’t all PS+ games (other than new releases such as Don’t Starve, Outlast etc) supposed to be +70% on metacritic?

Seems like either you don’t have PS+ or a Playstation at all. I, and many other people here, like knowing which games are coming to PS+.

I’m not referring to your inhability to google stuff, but to the headline and the “Yes, Sony’s the best ever!” attitude. I mean, we all know Sony’s been doing great with its plus subscription after the hacking, and I respect it because it offers a wide variety of games for people that might not be able to purchase them, but it’s bad enough with the fanboys already as it is to keep giving them “hey, look, Sony still cares for you: THE GAMER!” headlines…

And no, I don’t have either PS+ or Xbox Live Gold, in case you care that much. I quit paying on consoles a long time ago, after they ran out of exclusives I gave a damn about. Maybe when Dark Souls 2 arrives I’ll pay for a month of any online subscription to play while it arrives on PC, and if that’s the case I’ll let you know!

My ability to Google, or lack thereof, has nothing to do with it. This is a gaming site reporting on gaming news and the stuff coming to PS+ is news some people care about.

Also, I don’t think it is a matter of Sony is the best ever, it is a matter of showing gamers what great value PS+ really is.

Also also, sorry to hear you quit playing consoles. You are missing out on some great titles, but that is only a matter of opinion.

Also also also, it seems like you took my comment personally. It really wasn’t aimed at an insult. Neither is this one. It is only my opinion and you have the right to have yours.

Nah, I don’t take comments personally. I used to, though, a long time ago. But still, I think it’s great people realize the great value of PS+, I just don’t agree with presenting it as “They know what they’re doing” or “Ha! Microsoft Games with Gold could learn from this!”, because 1) Won’t happen and 2) It doesn’t help at all with the almost hopeless console war.

And I played consoles until GTA V, playing The Last of Us and Gears of War: Judgement (which I regret), and really there’s no other game I care about apart from Dark Souls 2. And yes, they’re opinions, and I think it’s great that Sony’s doing this. I just don’t think it should be presented as a competition every month.

It’s typical sensationalism to attract the crowd. I can already predict next month’s PS+ headlines -____-

Meanwhile on Xbox Live… a single tumble-weed blows across a dusty road!

However, one thing I don’t like about PSN+ is that you must connect your devices to the internet, once in a while. In other words, it has to “call home” for your apps to work, otherwise your games just doesn’t work. I found this out the hard way while gallivanting along the South coast, with nothing but a pair of board-shorts and my PSVita.

Remember when Microsoft took flack for their “call-home” DRM? Yeah… Sony snuck it in ever so quietly.
