Panasonic axes the Jungle

Jungle

Welcome to the jungle, we’ve got fun and..we’ll no..no we don’t. Remember that handheld device Panasonic announced last year? Y’know. the one that was supposed to be a trimmed down, mobile gaming device specifically for playing MMO’s?

We said that unless it managed to secure a deal to get World of Warcraft, it would die a swift death. It seems we were wrong; because it’s been killed before it managed to crawl.

In a statement to Reuters, the electronics company said : “Panasonic decided to suspend further development due to changes in the market and in our own strategic direction.”

Translated, I think it means “We’ve seen the 3DS and Sony’s NGP – and there’s no way our silly little Linux-powered handheld can even hope to compete.” Personally, I think Panasonic’s done the right thing. Had they released the Jungle, it would have just been a perpetual money vaccum for them. Why do MMO player’s even need a handheld device? It’s not like they leave their homes anyway!
