Pachter: PS4 500k ahead of Xbox One in the USA

Pachter

Wedbush analyst, Michael Pachter, sent out a note to investors ahead of the NPD US retail sales announcements. He gives a big edge to Sony, while Nintendo seems all but beaten.

According to Pachter, while PS4 reached sales of 2.1 million by 1 December, 700k of them were sold outside of the US of A. Sony apparently sold 1.25 million units in the US, with Xbox One selling 750k. This gives Playstation a half million install-base lead over the Xbox One at launch. While this may seem like a lot, the gap can easily close as the generation progresses.

More worrying is the prediction for the Wii U. Wedbush is forecasting Wii U sales of 150k units. Pachter predicts:

The new arrivals also appear to have put a significant dent in the pre-existing competition, as Pachter predicted Wii U sales would be down 65 percent year-over-year, with Xbox 360 and PS3 sales down 44 percent and 28 percent, respectively.

In the context of the holiday season, that is almost nothing. Is it time to write the Wii U off as a failure? Or will Nintendo still surprise us and pull out all the stops for their latest ailing console?

Will be interesting to see how much of a fan base Sony can gain in Xbox country.

Just heard a PS4 advert on 5fm, I am getting excited. What’s kinda worrying as the PS4 release date approaches is that MS still hasn’t mentioned when they plan to release their console here.

The console race is heating up, and will get really interesting once they’re released elsewhere in the world.

Will be interested to see how the PS4 fairs here when it’s released on Friday.

Zoe, you did neglect to mention that Pachter also said that the Xbox One is outpacing the PS4 in the USA as far as sales are concerned and that the PS4 selling more units in the USA compared to the Xbox One is not surprising as the PS4 did release earlier. http://www.el33tonline.com/post/2013/12/10/ps4-has-outsold-xbox-one-by-66-in-north-america-says-pachter-but-microsoft-is-outpacing-sony/

Microsoft has no one to blame but themselves. I’m stunned by how badly they bungled the XBone announcement and e3 presentations. It was a total PR disaster. I really thought that this generation would be close until Microsoft epically fumbled things not once but twice. It’s not a surprise that both consoles sold like hot cakes at release but I’d wager that we’ll see a significant sales gap next year. Microsoft handed Sony the eighth generation.

Now to be controversial… I think that the Wii U stands a surprisingly good chance of coming in second this generation. Nintendo just needs to abandon any delusions of winning back “hardcore” gamers and instead stick to family gaming, a significant subset of the market that it’s already dominating. I’m a gamer but I’m also a parent, the fact that Nintendo tends to be “kiddy” and “hasn’t grown up with me” is a selling point when I think about what to put in my living room to play with my kid.
