Over 3 Million Disney Infinity starter packs sold

Disney millions

When we got the NPD numbers for 2013, Disney Infinity was in the top ten list of best-selling games of 2013. So how many people have bought Disney’s Skylanders killer?

Disney announced that since launch on 18 August, Disney Infinity sold three million starter packs. This does not include booster packs and extra characters. That’s a very successful launch.

People wondered if Disney Infinity could compete with the more established Skylanders brand. Darryn picked up one of those three million starter packs, running around with some favorite characters. Despite some rough edges and the high cost, he seemed to enjoy the experience. It would seem from sales figures, that loyalty to the characters was more important than the gameplay experience at launch – people just can’t wait to run around, swashbuckling as Captain Barbossa or smashing everything as Syndrome.

In a statement, James Pitaro, president of Disney interactive, shared that Disney Infinity had exceeded sales expectations. He went on:

We’re thrilled that families and gamers alike have embraced Disney Infinity. We believe we’ve set the stage for Infinity to be an enduring video game platform.

It certainly seems that the brand and character loyalty has helped create a powerful game franchise for Disney. After years of struggling to get their gaming division up to scratch, Disney Infinity has given the company a strong foothold in the industry. Will it push Skylanders out of the market, or is there room for both franchises? I’m curious which franchise has a stronger collectible force on gamers – Skylanders are hugely successful with making gamers of all ages become obsessed with getting each and every figurine. When it comes to Disney, will players just want their favorite Disney characters, or will they have to catch them all?

A family member lent me their copy of this because they wanted me to figure out how the “Toybox” mode works so their kid can play. I must say, I had quite a bit of fun with this title, highlight being the Pirates of the Caribbean world – solid platforming fun, and with naval battles (can do some basic upgrades to your ship too). Tried the Incredibles world too, which was a tad bland 😛

I personally prefer the Disney Infinity idea… probably because I know the characters and have favorites… but how far can they actually extend the game and franchise to make it last longer?
