When people say the Do Gaming League (DGL) is South Africa’s biggest eSports league, they aren’t kidding. Over 2000 players have entered the league spanning across 11 competitive titles. And they said our local community isn’t all that big…
The registrations for competitors who want to keep their seed from last year in the DGL closed yesterday, but that that doesn’t mean they’ve closed completely. Gamers who want to compete in the league can still enter before registrations completely close on 20 January. So far, entries are looking pretty damn good with Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 boasting the most entries. Here’s a breakdown of how many teams and players have entered into the league. These numbers are sure to change before the end of the week.
Team entries:
- Counter-Strike: Global Offensive – 21 teams
- Dota 2 – 57 teams
- League of Legends – 56 teams
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 – 80 teams
- Battlefield 3 – 43 teams
- Call of Duty 4 – 35 teams
- StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty 2v2 – 25 teams
- Quake Live 2v2 – 14 teams
The MOBA’s (Dota 2 and League of Legends) entries are neck-and-neck and clearly far surpassing StarCraft 2 numbers. Let’s hope Blizzard has the answer to these low numbers with the release of Heart of the Swarm, the impendingexpansion for StarCraft 2. In the battle of the shooters Black ops 2 is leading with an estimate of 640 players entered and Battlefield 3 having only 516, give or take. For 5v5 games (Dota 2, League of Legends and the shooters excluding Battlefield 3) teams will consist of 5 players, and 3 reserves. Battlefield 3 teams require 10 players at minimum with a maximum of 12 permitted.
Individual entries:
- StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty (1v1) – 133 players
- Quake Live (1v1) – 67 players
- Fifa 13 (PS3) – 116 players
- Fifa 13 (PC) – 63 players
- Fifa 13 (Xbox 360) – 91 players
- Gran Turismo – 97 drivers
- Forza 4 – 52 drivers
For 1v1 matches StarCraft 2 has taken the lead with entries, Fifa 13 on PlayStation 3 not far behind. Seems players love their footie best on the PS3.
Taking a look at all players that have entered, numbers rise to over 2300 combined. People might say: “well, that’s nice, but how many will retire throughout the year? Not likely enough to make a serious impact on the numbers. Competitors will dedicate themselves to their game of choice throughout the year, for the grand finals held at a LAN. Prizes for winners of the leagues, as well as runner ups are sure to be tremendous. Last year Do Gaming had awesome sponsors, including Alienware, Samsung, Monster Energy, Telkom and I’m sure others that I can’t think of right now, giving away prizes worth just about R1.5m. Here’s to eSports in 2013! Can’t wait to see how much bigger and better it’s going to be this year.
