Outspoken feminist wins major GDC award

Every year at the Game Developers Conference they hand out awards for various things and one of the unique awards they hand out is the Ambassador Award which is a subjective award that is given to the person who has really helped gaming improve.

The Ambassador Award honors an individual or individuals who have helped the game industry advance to a better place, either through facilitating a better game community from within, or by reaching outside the industry to be an advocate for video games and help further our art.

Previous winners include relatively unknown people who have helped gamers whether we knew it or not or people who have dedicated their lives to helping others in the industry.

For example last year it was Chris Melissonis:

“Melissinos’ work as the creator and guest curator for the groundbreaking Smithsonian American Art Museum exhibition ‘The Art of Video Games,’ helped to cement the message of interactive entertainment as a form of modern culture.”

In 2012 it was a pair of lawyers, oddly enough, named Ken Doroshow and Paul M. Smith who

“led the legal team which resulted in the Court ruling that content-based restrictions on games are unconstitutional. The landmark ruling established First Amendment rights for those who create, develop, publish and sell video games, and is incredibly important to the past, present and future of video games as a creative medium.”

So yeah the first guy brought video game art right into the mainstream and is the person who got video games into the Smithsonian.

The lawyers saved countless developers and the industry from a barrage of legal cases that would have crippled their creativity and our enjoyment.

So it was quite a surprise that this years recipient is Anita Sarkeesian who’s claim to fame is as:

“ a media critic and the creator of Feminist Frequency, a video webseries that explores the representations of women in pop culture narratives. Her work focuses on deconstructing the stereotypes, patterns and tropes associated with women in popular culture as well as highlighting issues surrounding the targeted harassment of women in online and gaming spaces.”

Now I know it’s not just me but as important as some feel Anita’s work is I truly do not believe it is remotely as important as the two previous winners. And if you head over to the awards archives you can read about the other worthy winners who really did help gaming get to a better place.

Anita has simply turned the spotlight on a segment of the industry that all right-minded individuals already knew existed.

She didn’t improve anything, change anything or invent anything. Hell she hasn’t even protected anyone by being outspoken and antagonistic she has arguably made it worse for many female gamers who just want to game for fun.

Now don’t get me wrong. I think what she is doing is commendable, even if I don’t agree on the way she’s going about it. But to award her the ambassador prize simply smacks of political correctness and is another example of people being rewarded in the name of keeping the peace.

In my mind, GDC has always managed to avoid being the story and rather has focused on the industry and helping it grow. However that seems to be changing and the industry will be a worse of place for it.

What’s the chance that next years winner is going to be someone of African or Eastern European heritage who’s bio reads as follows

“His work focuses on deconstructing the stereotypes, patterns and tropes associated with African American males in popular culture as well as highlighting issues surrounding the targeted harassment of Africans in online and gaming spaces.”

It’s just so generic, boring and done. Didn’t deserve the award.

And yes before the Internet rodeo arrives, I am aware that there is a video out there where Anita states she is not a fan of videogames. Not really the ambassador I want for my industry.

TL;DR, She has a point and good on her for fighting for it but definitely doesn’t deserve an ambassador award.

Feminism is actually meant to promote equality for both sexes… Men can also be feminists, but some women use it as an excuse to hide their sexism O_o Much like how the Westboro Baptist Church used “Christianity” to try and hide their own homophobia

I mute enough people in Dota for this reason, so I’m just over the terrible attitudes people have towards other people. Why not just say “I posted that before his other reply, please look at the post times.” And then I apologise for being nub, and edit out my post with a further apology. Meh.

Yes, I’ve been guilty of this myself, but do apologise when I feel I’ve stepped over the line. You yourself can attest to that.

          • Brenz

            March 20, 2014 at 12:43

The definition of equality tends to change depending on the situation…

          • Unavengedavo(aka. Bilbo)

            March 20, 2014 at 12:44

Men should have equal rights over their children as long as they deserve that right, and the same goes for women. I know some women who got custody when they did not deserve it and the kids ended up suffering because of it!

          • hobbsan

            March 21, 2014 at 09:31

Then maybe you should start listening to some actual feminists, instead of listening to what anti-feminists _claim_ feminists say. You know, hearsay from angry misogynists will rarely give you a very good insight into what feminists think, claim and strive for.

But just to make it easy for you in this case; I’m a radical feminist and like every single feminist I know (and I know several hundreds) I, _of course_, think men should have equal custody over their children. I don’t even need to add “as long as they deserve it” since that is very nicely included in the word “equal”.

Oh my goodness, another crazy person who believes in whatever trash talk even more crazy people on the internet post. Anita works hard on these issues – as a matter of fact she has been twice here in Sweden twice within the last year, lecturing to and having seminars with different gaming development companies. Since my husband works as a game dev we know a lot of people in the business, which means we know that _actually_ happened (not to mention that he was at one of these lectures himself). He also says that her work has given a great push to the industry in starting to talk about these questions and starting to act on them.

So, in my opinion she deserves the prize as much as the next prize winning guy. But I’m guessing that’s where the main problem lies, a woman working for better representation of women, can of course never be on par with guys working for things that matter to male gamers as well. It really is too bad that Anitas work has opened my eyes to what a load of jerkwads the gaming community complacently houses. I used to be so pleased about being a geek, since I always thought that the geek culture would have to be better than the jock culture, geeks usually having been mistreated themselves. Sorry to see that both of them are chock full of people raising themselves at others’ expense, and both specifically containing the ever so charming custom of men raising themselves at the expense of women.

Whatever. The fact is she continues lie and has built a business on top her her pseudo ‘feminism’. I compare her to that devilish albanian dwarf, mother theresa that has built a business on the suffering of others.
She is a deceitful human being which I would not trust with a box of matches. If she has opened your mind, perhaps its a good idea to listen to those who has taken her rhetoric and ripped it a new one. Otherwise your brain is at risk of falling out.

She is not working for better representation of women, she is exploiting fools for cash.

          • hobbsan

            March 21, 2014 at 21:38

First of all, using “dwarf” as a derogatory term is not making you sound any better than the crappy person the many crappy comments you have already posted have made you out to be.

Second, as I tried to point out in my comment (maybe you should try reading it again) I know what she does for feminism and how. I have also listened to quite a lot of the people that have allegedly “taken her rhetoric and ripped it a new one” and I was not at all impressed. Like you, they were very fond of arguing against straw feminists, they had evidently not read up on the subject at hand in the least and they ignored whatever part of what Anita says they didn’t want to acknowledge. I have much higher standards than that and since I’m quite well versed on the subject myself I can perhaps see through their shortcomings more easily than you.

            March 21, 2014 at 22:45

It supposed to be descriptive of her stature, the devilish is the derogatory part. Well versed you say. You remind me of those people who start their argument with “As a mother…” as if though it gives you some magical +10 credibility on any subject.

And no, they don’t use a strawman argument, it takes just a tiny amount of critical thinking to see straight through her and her arguments. Any serious feminist have no time for her and her piffle.

          • hobbsan

            March 21, 2014 at 23:21

Really? Well, so far I’m not impressed by your “critical thinking” so I’m quite sure whatever you deem to be critical thinking will be equally sad.

You seem to think the mere fact that you exist gives you some magical +10 credibility on any subject, but then that’s not difficult to come across in anti-feminists who have never read a book on feminism.

When a picture of a known feminist that people like rags hate is posted in a state of abuse then you will have people comment. And just because someone lies (which we all do) doesn’t justify the dick who originally made the image. Would you like an image of your wife/mother/daughter like this out there under the banner of FREEDOM OF SPEECH? What about freedom of dignity? Anyway, I know you did not mean this shit storm to start, just remember what Gavin said about touchy themes and subjects. Someone obviously felt “Hey let me use my freedom of expression”, then Tim found it and shared it… don’t attack someone for sharing something that’s a bit off key, especially when they themselves haven’t produced what is being shared.

Yes, lets bring down an industry of artists, creatives, and people who want to explore the boundaries of their imagination. So we all can align with your sensitivities. How about we stop all violent games because well people die in real wars. How about we stop surgeon simulator because many people die from botched surgeries, how about we stop god games because some people are sensitive about their religion, how about we stop card games, because people have lost friends and family due to gambling?

We will end up with just Mario. Oh wait I forgot that was sexist too and contributed towards gender stereotypes that women are weak and need saving(and that men are always fat plumbers).

There is a good saying, a theory that explains everything ends up explaining nothing at all. The term privilege fits the bill perfectly. Its the goto word the ‘new feminists’. I can go on about men being the victims in domestic violence and the powerlessness of that situation, I can go on about the discrimination laws against white males here, but it would be missing the gist of the argument.

But hey its good to know having lost friends and family due to high jacking puts me in a bubble of privilege. I hope you don’t feel deminished as a human being because Mario wants to save his princess. 🙂

It should have been obvious to me long before I posted a single comment to you that you have no intention to understand or acknowledge the problems, because you’re much too busy being fearful for the future of the “industry of artists, creatives, and people who want to explore the boundaries of their imagination”. How nice that you are so concerned about the boundaries of imagination (which can apparently not be explored without the freedom to be jerks – pretty crappy imagination if you ask me but maybe game dev boundaries simply don’t lie further away than that). You keep working on that, I’ll focus on human rights and we’ll both be happy. Bye.

Cry me a river. You can’t even dismiss my argument. You could try if you understood it first. It not about about fear. Its about the weakness of causality in the ‘feminist’ argument.

EDIT: Its about freedom of expression too. 🙂

          • hobbsan

            March 22, 2014 at 00:45

Oh. My. God. You really think that you’ve understood, don’t you? You really think that your “arguments” are actually relevant? News flash, nobody but you (and possibly some of your equally misguided friends) is talking about causality – we’re talking about reenforcement.

That’s why most of your examples where completely irrelevant – because you don’t seem to understand the difference between occurrences (usual or unusual) and structures. We are trying to explain how present power structures are reenforced by the constant reproduction of them in e g popular culture. Nobody thinks they are _caused_ by popular culture.

If we lived in a society where kidnapping happens rarely and is generally abhorred it might not be problematic to picture kidnappings in games. In a society where kidnapping is viewed as a completely natural and even practical way to get what you want, it would of course be a way more sensitive question. Then the question of how your game would portray the kidnapping becomes a lot more relevant. If you would still portray it a good way for the player to get what they want, then it would be reenforcing a negative structure, that real people suffer from. It’s also a matter of amount. If 90% of games in such a community used kidnapping tropes, then there would hopefully be people reacting to that too.

Shifting goal posts. Tis all about causality. Reinforcement is a verb.

Going to leave you with these to consider:

If you are feeling playful, you’d actually find it ironic that she herself exploits the damsel in distress trope(in real life), through her kickstarter. By luring in clueless white knights to solicit a shitload of money from them to produce some crappy pseudo documentary. 😛

          • hobbsan

            March 23, 2014 at 00:47

I have seen them already – I have actually listened quite a lot to what people criticising Anita’s work have to say and I was not at all impressed. I even believe I told you what I think about their “arguments” in a different thread.

Regarding the very tiresome “Anita made herself a damsel in distress”-whine: No. Anyone claiming that has apparently _not_ understood even the definition of the damsel in distress trope. Either you are saying that everyone trying to raise money through Kickstarter is damsel’d or you are saying that anyone who has the nerve to rat out jerkwads ganging up on someone to bully them into silence is damsel’d. Both seem extremely stupid in my view – I’m sick and tired of people acting as if systematic bullying supported by crappy societal structures is a problem that can or should be solved singlehandedly. They are not. Getting help in fighting a good fight is NOT the same as being a damsel in distress. Or did you perhaps miss the fact that Anita’s agency is in no way taken away from her? Quite the opposite actually, she is up and about fighting for what she believes in, and THAT is what is pissing people who don’t agree with her off.

It’s a bit sad though, that you fail to realise that the reason you’re not winning the rest of us over is not because we’re not listening to your attempts at “informed criticism”. Rather it’s because you never listened enough to or learn enough about the subject you’re trying to argue against. This means most of what you say either lacks relevance or lacks a correct basis and we end up in a discussion on two completely different levels. Now, you might not like to hear it, but being a gamer, however brilliant, doesn’t mean you necessarily know the first thing about feminism. For people who do, that means discussing this with you is like a mathematician being expected to take a high school drop out seriously even as they claim that math is like totally unnecessary and you know, ’cause you don’t need math really, cause hey dude, who evvvvvvver needed to solve an equation an’ shit, girl?

And for the record – Anita wasn’t white knighted by a bunch of gullible dudes. Anita was _supported_ by a huge number of people – men AND women (because yeah, we exist too) – who knew fully well what they were doing. I know, since I was one of them. I gave her my support, even though I knew she didn’t need more money (she was already way past her goal at that point) because I wanted to make a point. The point was to demonstrate that we are MANY who are fed up with the shitty attitudes that fester in the gaming culture, while many gamers like to pretend that they are better than the general population. And we didn’t need Anita to tell us it – we’ve all experienced it ourselves. That you have found a couple of women, who are still stuck in internalised misogyny mode doesn’t change that. Pretty much every woman has been there and I’m no exception, so I see right through these poor women and their “analyses”. Internalised discrimination and trying to win the approval of the privileged group by trampling on your peers is after all a well known strategy that can be found in every kind of discrimination.

It’s the same thing over and over, but i really hate when gaming gets such a huge focus all other mediums have done it 1st, for longer and still do it much more in your face.

Every male actor and actress are good looking, if you dont look good, you cant be a villian/hero or even almost an extra in a tv advert about genital herpies? and the Music industry is following the same path, with less exceptions to the rule.
Even if you can sing, dance, do magic, and have all the charm but your not easy on the eyes… to bad.
Sure the woman in games are not realistic but not every guy is 10 foot tall with a square jaw and broad shoulders either.

In fact I believe women can do things as good in not better than many men. People think I am promoting violence against women, really need to take a look and think, I mean the reason you going to court is because of that. Some things people just take too far, really the world flippin world needs to lighten up and take it at face value. If I truely made the picture and said some big speech how this image is good, the by all means shoot me down in flames. Thing is did I do that so no.

I think it would really help the discussion if we raised it above the level of middle school logic.

That women are equal in theory is of course not the same as it being true that men and women are treated equally in practice. The fact that women get physically abused more often than men in relationships has of course little to do with their strength and everything to do with the societal rules we are exposed to our whole lives (for example, it’s more unusual for a woman than a man to get beat up on a night out – if we leave the beatings that go with rape outside of this). Women are taught to be submissive and to always be putting themselves in others’ shoes, while men are taught to be “strong” and unemotional. Women are taught that their value lies in taking care of others, especially their spouse and family, while men are taught that their value lies in taking responsibility for and charge of that same family. These are all excellent components in an abusive relationship, especially since every little sense of failure regarding ones “chores” will also lead to a sense of failing at “being a real woman/man”, which is a very dangerous feeling since we have made it super important to “be a real woman/man” in our societies (as if it were possible to fail at being a “real” woman/man).

Ok, this could be a never ending post so just going to wrap it up quickly: Saying that women are the weaker sex is neither necessarily true in every situation nor very interesting if we are talking physically. However, women are weaker from a power structure stand point and that is what we need to change for women and men to be equal, as in the sense that we are “born equal”.

Gavin, do you read the news? I follow it quite a bit. Do you know how many articles I read about young children getting raped, beaten, threatened with violence etc? Not to mention the deaths of infants due to the wounds they suffered from being raped. In this country, it is a bloody epidemic.
Violence against women, in this case not an actress playing a role, but a real life person, (Even though it is implied) is now being pointed at and laughed at.
            It is made a joke.
Please. To everyone defending Tim’s rights to post this, remember to laugh next time you read an article about an infant being raped, or a woman being beaten to death.

She stole the footage, intentionally showed females as victims even in the games in which they really weren’t, took the fun out or everything, showed male gamers as depraved sex-driven maniacs (By killing a dancer in Hitman: Absolution herself, even though nobody else did it.) and made underwhelming amount of videos in comparison to the resources she got. The last one might actually be a good thing.
