Oh look, the Xbox One will indeed come with a chat headset

Who’d have thought a little chat headset could kick up such a storm? Microsoft’s Xbox 360 came with one in the box, but its next generation console the Xbox One was revealed to be shipping without one in the box; sold instead as a separate accessory.

Kinect, Microsoft said, would be able to fill in for a dedicated headset. And then Sony revealed their PlayStation 4 would come with a flimsy little chat headset in the box, making people hate Microsoft even more. Continuing their recent spate of about-turns, Microsoft has now confirmed that yes, the Xbox One will indeed come with an included chat headset. No, this isn’t deja vu; this time it’s been confirmed.

Day one purchasers of the next Xbox from Microsoft will not be able to nab themselves a special achievement, but those who pick up an Xbox One within the launch period will get a chat headset as well. According to Microsoft, all of the launch consoles – not just the fancy day one editions – will have a chat headset included in the box. The extra goodness won’t increase the price of the console either; think of it as “free.”

So why the decision to include a headset? Is it another remarkable 180? Is it to compete with the PS4, tit-for-tat?

We’re closely evaluating our program as we prepare to go to market in November. We heard from gamers that a headset was an important part of the gaming experience, so we decided to include the Xbox One Headset in the Xbox One bundle, says Microsoft.

We’re always thinking about what’s next for the platform, and adding the Chat Headset is something we’ve been discussing internally for some time. We closely listen to feedback and this is a good example of taking that feedback and making a change to delight our fans.

And no, it’s not just because of the PS4’s included headset; Microsoft says that “Delighting our customers is our focus.”

Major Nelson confirmed it all here, where you can watch the delicious unboxing. The thing will also come with a 4K-capable HDMI cable. Hmmm… So that’s what you get for your $500. What do you think?

Will the launch version be available when it’s launched in SA next year, or will we get the normal retail version? also ….. how will this impact me and my PS4?

Either Geoffolus is writing in medieval English or the PS4 fanbois are illiterate.

The Major Nelson article also metions the “Xbox One Day One edition” with “DAY ONE 2013” controller etc. etc. etc. I take it those are in selected regions only. The question I have is that if you have pre-ordered (which I haven’t), how do you know what you are going to get. If I was a die-hard fan, I’ll LOVE the DAY ONE stuff.
How about a MY XBOX GOT STOLEN ON DAY ONE edition?

By the time the Xbox One launches, the PS4 will be but a memory.

The PS4 and XBOXONE’s hardware is very similar.Just imagine cross play between the consoles? Playstation vs Xbox multiplayer modes…..would be epic.
