Obsidian is considering a Pillars Of Eternity sequel

Pillars-of-eternity

Pillars of Eternity is another one of those Kickstarter success stories, that is almost finished now. Crowdfunded to the tune of over $4 million, the Obsidian developed game drops in March. And Obsidian already has plans for a sequel.

Speaking to Polygon, Obsidian Entertainment CEO Feargus Urquhart spoke about crafting a sequel as the next project for that studio. “Eternity 2, that’s the next thing. Probably at the end of this month, Josh [Sawyer] and Adam [Brennecke], the key guys on the team are all going to sit down,” Urquhart said.

They’ve already come up with a list of what they want to do, kind of new game systems and that kind of stuff. We’re going to try and get going on that as soon as we can.

But don’t expect the soon to be released Pillars Of Eternity to be a project that is released and quickly forgotten about, as Urquhart explained that there was stull plenty of work to do in creating additional content for the game after it launches. “We’re going to do some expansions because we said we would as a part of the Kickstarter. We’ve already started working on artwork,” Urquhart said.

So we’ve already kind of figured out where we want to go in the world and the artists are doing some tests.

With Kickstarter being massively instrumental in the success of funding Pillars Of Eternity, expect that crowdfunding muscle to be leveraged again. “I think it might be a good time again for a Kickstarter, so we’re talking about it,” Urquhart said. “So we need to start talking about Eternity 2 so we can say we would like you to back us so we can do these things.”

It’s not 100 percent. The reason is because first we didn’t want to do it until [Pillars of Eternity] came out. The second thing is that the Kickstarter stuff is kind of up and down here and there. But the Shadowrun guys look like they’re pretty successful, they’re like one and a half or two million. I know if we put exploding kittens in it we could make billions.

Hell, I’d play that. Right now however, Pillars Of Eternity is looking solid. It’s got nostalgia, it’s got some cool visuals and it’ll most likely have a very dedicated fanbase attached to it as well. I’m keen to see if Kickstarter has indeed produced another winner when the game arrives on March 26.

  1. Why is Mugabe coming out from that lady in white with the rifle?
Is he a ghost, is she a ghost, or does spell of blame turn you immaterial and increase your movement speed?

What sort of face would you have if something like that happened to you?

Wait, a game that isn’t yet out already has a sequel planned? Did they have tea with the execs at Ubisoft or EA or something? Seriously?

Why not wait and see if people actually LIKE the first game?

How about they release the game first and then we will see?

I’d actually love a comedy-type, think Borderlands style, isometric RPG with exploding cats.

    Or a proper Vampire one.

Vampire one. 100%. Something along the lines of VTM:Bloodlines in terms of feel and RPG depth, but in a modern engine and even in isometric view. Yeah, that’d be awesome.

It’s such a pity Twilight killed vampires. Who knew they’d be more vulnerable to teen violation than sunlight?

Considering how many teens they’ve violated over the years it’s not surprising they eventually fought back.

        MOAR isometric non-hack&slash rpgs!

Also, twilight couldn’t have killed vampires, because those things weren’t vampires, and those other things weren’t werewolves. They basically did this:

The problem isn’t that they aren’t vampires or werewolves (we know this) – the problem is that it made teens believe that they were.

Well I suppose since the expansions will use the same system as Pillars of eternity (PoE) they can start looking at creating a new system for PoE2 without losing resources.

Physical copies as well? niice! Those would have come in those big boxes. I got the first 6 with with an awesome gog DnD promo, and have gotten through half of them so far. Numbers 4,5 and 6 are still on my to-do list 😛 (although I’ve gotten very far with IWD2 in the past – up to some sort of monastery)

Yeah I got the GoG bundle too, since I’ve misplaced a disk or two over the years. 🙁

And those boxes were large, I have a large box full of old game boxes. Ps, the collecters edition for BG2 was huge for its contents. I still wear the worn out, hole-ridden t-shirt I got with it today. XD

Ok I’ll admit I enjoyed NWN2 and its exp packs.

NWN1 got old though, and I never did buy their exp packs. I should download from GoG and give those a whirl.

Oh Yes, possibly as a breather before BG2 and ToEE 🙂 Neither the basegames of NWN1/2 are that brilliant for some reason, but in each case the expansions kick ass

Let’s see Pillars of Eternity released, it fully supported, expansions be fully fleshed out, and THEN talk about a sequel. Way too soon, especially to be beating the Kickstarter drum already, when you haven’t even gotten the first one out yet.
