Yes, it’s ugly. Sure, many might find it pointless. But now, the Nvidia Shield will be available for $50 cheaper than originally reported. Is that enough to make this device claim its niche in the market?
As Geoff reported last month, the Nvidia Shield is basically an android phone attached to a controller. Through it, you can play all the games you normally might play on your android phone, as well as stream your Steam games through it – assuming your computer is within range. This questionable device will now be available for $299.
The Shield will be available on 27 June, and apparently has gone through extensive market research. Yup, according to Nvidia’s blog,
Rather than being secretive about SHIELD and what it can do, we decided to bring gamers in on the conspiracy, announcing our plan to bring a portable gaming device with console-class controls and a high-def 5-inch screen to market in January at the Consumer Electronics Show.
Since then, we’ve put SHIELD in the hands of thousands of gamers. Some have been professional press. Others have been inside our own company. But most have been people like the tens of thousands who streamed through our booth at PAX East and E3.
They’ve helped us build a better product. Feedback from gamers is why SHIELD’s triggers have the perfect throw length. Why SHIELD’s buttons have just the right amount of give. Why SHIELD’s thumb sticks are so satisfying to flick. Why playing games on SHIELD’s pure Android software feels so slick.
I’m still not sold on this device. Not in the slightest. I don’t care if the trigger and thumb sticks are satisfying – I have other sources of satisfaction that aren’t quite so weird! Does this change of price make you more interested in the slightest?

Still too expensive for what it is I reckon.
Sadly it’s just too niche for me and I don’t fall in to the crowd category that would want it.

Gadget lovers. You have people who love collecting all sorts of cool gadgets.
To them this is perfect and would be epic to have.
It’s not something I see ending up in mainstream though

Ture I guess that is very niche indeed, but it’s not an outstanding device really on it’s own, well imo

I played with one at E3 – and it /feels/ great, and the streaming is super smooth. But I just can;t justify it, at all.

Yup. Do you think NVIDIA are going to have tough times in the next few years? I’m sure the Shield cost them a lot in R&D, and it’s guaranteed to underwhelm in sales. Not to mention, all 3 consoles have shifted to AMD architecture, and are pushing PC development in that direction consequently.

The price is insane. $299 for this or $399 for a PS4? It really doesn’t make sense.
Although, I have to admit. I am intrigued by the idea and it would be cool to see what they will be able to do with Shield2. If they can stream my Steam games while not subjected to that limited range, this has the potential to be really cool.

Seriously though, yuck… And no thanks. If I were ever in the market for a mobile gaming device, I’d get me a PSVita. Sorry Nvidia…

Very expensive but I disagree with most of the negativity. This is the only device I know of thus far that can stream games from your PC to a handheld and then also on to a large screen. It’s effectively a Wii U controller for PC.
