Details about No Man’s Sky have been slowly trickling in during this year, especially after the impressive showing the game had at E3. It was one of the highlights of Sony’s press conference, punctuated by the news that it would be launching on the PS4. Without a word on any other release platforms, you would assume that No Man’s Sky was a PS4 exclusive. That’s only half true.
No Man’s Sky will be exclusive to the PS4…for a limited time. Hello Games is bringing the title to the PS4 first as it is their lead platform, but have confirmed that the game will land on PC afterwards. In the September edition of Edge magazine, Hello Games’ Sean Murray explained why the studio chose to lead with Sony’s new hardware.
The reason comes down to developing for hardware that is the same everywhere, at least for now. Hello Games wants to push their procedural algorithm to the limit, but they needed a constant hardware benchmark to do so.
“Unlike most games, the actual hardware really affects what we can do in terms of the richness of the worlds and things like that. It isn’t just adding a veneer of resolution, or extra antialiasing options. It has a real effect on what we can actually do in the universe.”
It makes sense then that a console was chosen before the millions of different PC variations. Obviously when No Man’s Sky does release on PC there will be some extra visual bells and whistles, but the experience will probably be exactly the same.
We know that No Man’s Sky is launching sometime in 2015. The question now is how long will it be a PS4 exclusive for?

Really looking forward to this. Love how he basically said ‘the Bone’s hardware cannot handle the game’ 🙂

That is actually a good reason to keep it to 1 platform.
Now if only other devs would take a paragraph from this page and not make stupid and ridiculous excuses for why they’re going platform exclusive, especially when it’s only due to them being paid off by someone.

If they can pull it off, this will be the console version of Elite. My body is ready. My banana stirs in anticipation.
