No Man’s Sky stole the VGX awards

No Man's Sky

There were plenty of games shown at the VGX awards on the weekend, from Titanfall strutting out some new mechs through to some tantalising gameplay from Quantum Break. But out of all those big budget titles, one four man studio may have stolen the show with No Man’s Sky.

No Man’s Sky puts players in the cockpit of a starship that can explore a galaxy full of solar systems and planets. The catch here though, is that each procedurally generated planet can be explored, with no two worlds and their ecology being the same.

“If you see the stars, those are real stars, they have their own planets around them, and you can go there,” said Hello Games Sean Murray to Gametrailers.

It’s a science-fiction game, but it’s not like most other sci-fi games. We set out to make a game that challenges what it means to be next-gen, and what it means to be an indie title.

It’s going to mess with people’s perceptions of Hello Games, and I have no idea how people will react. It’s different, and pretty much the furthest thing from what we’ve done before.

So in essence, No Man’s Sky is all about exploration. See a lake? Slip your wetsuit on and go for a swim. See a planet above you that looks inviting? Jump in your ship and jet off towards it. If you can see it, you can reach it.

Out of everything that was shown off at the Spike VGX, this little but ambitious game just blew me away.

In an age where everything is known about every game being made, for a game to come out of nowhere…and absolutely BLOW you away, is utterly amazing…Wow, i got goose bumps

    • RinceGivesRspectsToMadiba

      Me too man!

    • Robert Hart

To be honest we’ve been fed the same old rehashes year after year. It seems as if very few developers are using much imagination and ambition these days. So it does not take much (besides money) for someone to grab one of those plenty ideas and actually do it.

I mean.. why cant someone just make a Dayz type openworld survival non-mmo game that feels and shoots like HL2? Done right (and not cartoony like so many have done), it would sell like hotcakes.

      • Umar Seeker of Truth

Well the closest would be Stae of Decay which did really well and is actually a really good game minus some hiccups. but I feel you man

        • Robert Hart

State of Decay is a catroon looking game that feels and looks like GTA4. If they want to get the atmosphere right then it needs to be rusty and gritty and very realistic.

Cartoon graphics in my mind instantly relates to jokes or comedy. Comedy and zombies dont mix :P

          • Umar Seeker of Truth

Yeah I know what you mean. But you wold be surprised though by the game. But it isn’t super serious which I guess is what you want. A true post apocalyptic survival game would be awesome. I thought I am Alive would be that. turned out I was wrong. The Last of Us is amazing though

  • Matthew Holliday

    well this looks… interesting

  • Admiral Chief of Souls

    Whoa! Very cool indeed

  • Hammersteyn

    Soooooooo PC only?

    • Admiral Chief of Souls

      Ya think?

      • Hammersteyn

Will need a joystick. Can’t fly a damn with mouse or keyboard.

        • Admiral Chief of Souls

How do you fly your Mosquito then?

          • Hammersteyn

Like Launchpad. Equipped the ejection system because I end up using the damn thing like a giant missile.

          • Admiral Chief of Souls

LOL, thinking of investing in that, either that or those uberkill rocket pods

          • Hammersteyn

Have the rocket pods, damage isn’t that amazing though.

Doubt it,. Hello Games has only released games for console and mobile before.

      • RinceGivesRspectsToMadiba

        Good to hear ;)

  • Kensei Seraph remembers Madiba

I’m going to have to upgrade my PC for this, and it looks like it will be worth it.

  • RinceGivesRspectsToMadiba

    Holy crap!

  • Admiral Chief of Souls

Makes me think of SPORE, and how you can explore almost everywhere, very, VERY cool indeed

    • OldManLight

      • Alien Emperor Trevor

Thank you. It’s time to beat Darryl like a bad step-child.

        • RinceGivesRspectsToMadiba

*Like a bad, ginger step-child. Fixed for you.

          • Alien Emperor Trevor

I purposely left “ginger” out because I didn’t want to confuse the two of you.

        • Lego Witcher of the Squirrels

          *Frodo

He’s not Darryn, Darryl or Brenda anymore

      • Admiral Chief of Souls

*upgrades baton to CLUEBAT OF DEATH

  • Lego Witcher of the Squirrels

This looks and sounds pretty awesome… an entire galaxy to explore from space to planet… *hyped*

    • Admiral Chief of Souls

You will be frequenting the boobies planet methinks

      • Alien Emperor Trevor

Do boobies planets have realistic orbital jiggle mechanics?

      • Lego Witcher of the Squirrels

As long as they’re good looking, non-homicidal, Amazons… then yes…

      • Johann

As long as it’s not the Latex Babes from Estros

  • Brenz

amazing, i have wanted an exploration game with this kind of depth and detail for so long now, cant wait!

  • Rags

While procedural is cool for this type of game, graphically it looks very poor. And that will always be the compromise.

  • Warren Ross

    Holy shit! Sandworms!

  • Pieter Kruger

All Indie developers take note, this is a game, not hose piss ass phone games your trying to paw of as AAA titles!!

  • http://ninsci.weebly.com/ Deeboy

While Destiny looks very enticing with stunning graphics. I thought this game was more of what I was looking for in a space exploration sim. You can customize spacecraft in Destiny but you personally can’t fly them. This game seems to be the game that allows your imagination to run wild with the possibilities. The reference to Frank Herberts Dune a movie that is still hard to create even with todays special effects was all I needed to get me interested. The sheer scope of the game is worth the purchase by itself if the game play is well incorporated.

    • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

Absolutely! That’s why I’m so excited for this game. There’s so much promise here, and I really hope they can pull it off.

  • http://www.lazygamer.net Gavin Mannion

I’m one of the only ones around who isn’t blown away by this… I’m just not sure what the point is

  • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

This is the game I want, screw Call of Duty: Titanfall. This is the game that made the VGX bearable and left me with a smile on my face.

  • Ricardo Harvey

    so um…where’s the action?
