Nintendo says there’s no difference between PlayStation and Xbox

Nintendo’s Wii U has been out for about a year longer than its current competitors, the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. While those platforms are the home of big-budget 3rd party titles and action blockbusters, the one thing they don’t have is great exclusives.  The Wii U does, says Nintendo of America’s Reggie Man-meat Fils-Aime.

“I would love to have Call of Duty on our platform,” he told Recode, speaking about the system’s lack of third party support.  “ I would love to have any of the big blockbuster, multi-platform titles. But I have to say, more specifically, I want games that provide a differentiated consumer experience. If you look at the other two competitive platforms, fundamentally, what’s the difference?” he said.

“When you look at either one, either by themselves doesn’t have a lot of exclusive content. They have a lot of shared content. Look at it from the standpoint of, what don’t they have? They don’t have our games. They don’t have Mario and Zelda.

“I’d much rather be where Nintendo is, with a differentiated platform, differentiated set-up experiences that we can provide uniquely to the consumer. Let those other guys battle it out over, you know, which visual representation of Call of Duty is most compelling. I like our chances of having a differentiated console and a differentiated series of experiences.”

According to Fils-Aime, the Wii U’s install base has doubled in a year, thanks to games like Mario Kart 8, Bayonetta 2 and the impending Smash Bros Wii U  – which should help with third party support.. Just not immediately.

“This business is built on a year-and-a-half or two-year planning cycles, especially for the home console space,” he said. “Products that they’re thinking about today are not going to come into the market until two years down the road. By doing a great job today in the here and now, that’s what’s going to feed the pipeline of great new third-party content coming onto our platform. For us, that’s the long game that we’re trying to play.”

In many ways, I agree with him. The Ps4 and Xbox One are indeed quite similar, and right now I don’t see much point in owning both of those. I do, however, think that having the Wii U as your primary or only console will lead to little but sadness. I’m pretty happy to be dual-wielding the Ps4 and Wii U, which I think gives me a balanced, rounded selection of games. I may not use my Wii U as much as I should, but I’m damned happy to own one when those special, exclusive games – Like Mario Kart and Splatoon – come around.

I seriously contemplated getting the Wii U some time ago but there just weren’t enough games I’m interested in to purchase it (and I have a huge soft spot for Nintendo). As for the “long run” they’ve already lost market share and won’t recover it easily.

“I like our chances of having a differentiated console and a differentiated series of experiences.”

The PS4 and the boner can do both. They can play Far Cry 4 and a game like Minecraft.

Personally, I think Nintendo should ditch their console business and stick to making epilepsy-inducing coloured games for PS4 and Xbox. They can even market a controller accessory for those games.

Can’t say I disagree either – both consoles very similar but then so was 360 and PS3 and they didn’t do too badly. Pretty pictures do sell.

Wii was the right product at the right time; but that bubble has since burst. So now what? As much as I would love a WiiU, price just isn’t right for me personally. Their games prices just about never come done (Wii Kart is what 8/9 yrs old and still sells for R450ish…) either.

If you only game on one of the major platforms (no NOT PC) then WiiU as 2nd makes sense. BUT if you want to play Bloodborne and Titanfall – then more difficult to include WiiU…

Its all about priorities and money for each person I suppose.

He’s not wrong. There really is no difference between Xbox One and PS4 (and don’t even mention FPS – that’s not a real difference). The Wii U has a lot to offer in terms of diversity of games. People should just open their eyes and realise it’s not JUST Mario and Zelda games.

I think his argument is flawed. He wishes he had the games that would make the Wii U little more than a weaker version of the Xbox One and PS4, but since he doesn’t have them, hey, what’s the difference between those consoles since they have those games?

Sony and Microsoft have their own share of exclusives. Given the time involved, they have done a better job–especially Microsoft–of making exclusives available than Nintendo did with the Wii U. Sony’s usually a bit slower on the release of exclusive titles that really push the envelope, but if the PS3 or PS2 are anything to go by, next year should be their big year.

Assuming they don’t run out of money.

Um, playstations work, have always worked, and have rarely had problems ever, and xbox’s (with MAYBE the exception of the original) haven’t. I’d call that a major difference right there.
Xbox = Disc drive failure more often than not.
Xbox 360 = red ring of death, 1/3 fail ratio OUT OF THE BOX, brand new. Cannot be fixed at home.

Xbox One = Again, disc drive issues with not reading the disc (look on youtube, you’ll see a lot of that).

    Playstation = Uuuuuhhhh, got nothing.
Playstation 2 = Minor disc reader lens misalignment that can be fixed by an amateur.
Playstation 3 = Overheating when not ventilated properly, but guess what? That’s not a design flaw, that’s a stupidity error on the user’s part for jamming a bunch of crap near the fans.

Xbox One hasn’t had issues. There are an acceptable amount of defects for a product like this. Neither the PS4 or Xbox One have had an unacceptable percentage of defects.

The Xbox 360 was another story.

My point is, there have been a lot of reports of that same issue for xbox one, so yes, it has had issues. Whether it’s an acceptable amount or not is not my point. Personally, when I buy a system, I expect it to do more than p*ss me off for not working lol. I’ve heard very little recent news regarding defects, which is good, but all in all, my point still stands; sony’s systems have had very little real issues to them, while microsoft has struggled for years with hardware failure. While it may be an acceptable amount of such failure for a market like this, it’s still a major difference when compared to sony’s playstations, and thus nintendo saying they’re “fundamentally the same” is not really true. One has always worked, the other hasn’t, there’s no data to support otherwise and there’s overwhelming proof of the fact.

But yeah, the 360 was crap lol. I dare say, the 360 was probably the worst product to hit store shelves in over a decade.
