Next-gen installs will take up a lot of space

Space

I’m both excited for, and disillusioned by the next generation of consoles. Mostly, I’m excited by the games – but I’m disenchanted by the fact that they’re becoming so much more like PC’s, in that every single game you play will have to be installed. And it seems like those installs will eat a ton of  your hard drive space.

The folks at NeoGAF have collated all the game install sizes – and here’s how much each of the Xbox One launch titles takes up.

  • Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag – 20GB
  • Battlefield 4 – 33GB
  • Call of Duty: Ghosts – 39GB
  • Crimson Dragon – ?
  • Dead Rising 3 – 19GB
  • FIFA 14 – 8GB
  • Fighter Within – 9.2GB
  • Forza Motorsport 5 – 31GB
  • Just Dance 2014 – 22GB
  • Killer Instinct – 2.4GB / 3.4GB for full install, can play after downloading 2.4GB
  • Lego Marvel Super Heroes – ?
  • Lococycle – 13GB
  • Madden NFL 25 – 12GB
  • NBA 2K14 – 43GB
  • NBA Live 14 – 9GB
  • Need for Speed: Rivals – ?
  • Powerstar Golf – 3.9GB
  • Ryse: Son of Rome – 34GB
  • Skylanders: Swap Force – 15GB
  • Xbox Fitness – 246MB
  • Zoo Tycoon – 2.6GB
  • Zumba: World Party – 24GB

By my calculation, that’s three quarters of the Xbox One’s hard drive, just on launch games – so you’ll soon wish you could upgrade the thing. Unfortunately, you can’t.

Neither console is capable of playing games straight off the disc. But while installs are mandatory on Sony’s machine as well, at least they give you the option to replace the drive as you see fit. And while Xbox One games can’t be played as they’re being installed just yet allow you to start playing once you’ve installed half the game , the PS4 reportedly allows you to start playing within seconds to minutes. Knack, which has a 37Gb mandatory installation will apparently start playing 10 seconds after the disc is in the machine.

Neither console is capable of playing games straight off the disc.

Also, take a gander at those file sizes. If the Xbox One were to be a purely digital system as was originally intended, we in SA would have to wait ages to play games.

with what games? Mostly FPS and RTS’s? Some racing games? No GranTurismo, no Forza games which i personally think are the best racing games. I know you get the more driven simulations, but not everyone is into hardcore simulation racers. What about Final Fantasy games? What about classics like Lost Odessy. RPG’s on PC are thin as well. In general there are a lot more options on a console than pc and in the end its all about the games.

You can easily replace it with a bigger one if you so wish. I have a 160GB in my PS3 and current installs being what it is I have about 10 AAA games installed plus a bunch of indie games. Not sure how it all fits but there it is.

I know right. That’s all I seem to need. As I finish a game from PS+ I delete it and download the next months free title. 500GB isn’t that bad. PC gamers has terabytes of HD space and so do I. But it’s mostly for movies and series

Can I please ask a question? I fail to see how these questions weren’t asked originally by Microsoft themselves, but I need to ask it?

Why make the system one that has to have games installed to disc without the option to get a bigger HDD?

Seriously. It’s a fair and logical question.

Oh look, gamers have to install games now. Let’s start them off with a 500GB HDD and not allow them to upgrade it! That will teach them to have too many games installed at once! HAH!!

Wait, music and movies? Why? Pfff. They don’t need the space. 500GB is like plenty right? Right guys? Anyone?

    NO! Just no!

Bad, bad, bad, bad planning MS. BAD MS!

The answer, my good man, is very simple – money. Money up front for the console then more money when gamers fork out for larger/ additional drives. “Milk them gamers for all they are worth” seems to be the sentiment of corps lately.

Well in the case of the Xbone you can’t simply replace the HDD… I think they will be releasing a later version of the console with either a bigger drive, or the ability to swop it out and then charge a fortune for that one.

I suspect the devs will come up with a way to use external drives via usb that would function in the same manner as the internal drive. that way they can market their Xbox specific drives (perhaps locked to the OS) whilst generating additional hardware sales. An upgradable version might be what they are thinking and that once again comes back to them milking their support base.

Clever. Now they force you to pay extra for a Teraflop HD a year from now when the cost of manufacturing the machine has gone down. Like the SLIM versions the price stays the same over 5 years while they clear the stock of the old fat models, instead of giving a price drop to the fat model.
    WIN for them.

The new gen is an excuse for lazy compression. Why spend 6 months trying to compress data to fit onto a DVD9 when one can just lob it on a Blu-Ray.

Just goes to show how digital only would be an epic fail especially on consoles. Majority of the market just does not have the correct internet connection to support it.

Sony and MS most likely went for a 500Gb drive to keep cost down even though they know in reality it’s not the ideal size.

Why the heck MS does not allow a Hard drive upgrade is beyond me. Luckily Seagate has released a 9.5mm 2Tb drive which I’ll definitely be getting for the PS4.

Xbox had a cheap 4GB option in the current gen, and then released a 250gb option alongside it. Sony had a 160GB and a 320GB. I predict the same thing this time around.

I have 32 installed games on my pc, excluding exp packs. At one stage, I had 15 or so Xbox games as well (trade-in’s rock). Its very possible, and likely. If I didn’t have a PC, I’d probably have 30 – 40 xbox games right now.
