Lara Croft, about to Skyrim some mercs. Oh, the arrow-knee!

Lara isn’t just getting a fresh start to the latest Tomb Raider title, as it seems that she’ll be experiencing a new form of gameplay as well, into a more open world.

Game Informer has revealed that players will have access to several hubs, which will be non-linear in nature, as well as some the option to upgrade abilities with XP, earned throughout her adventures, that can be spent at several base camps.

Upgrades will include augmentations for her bow, extra ammo and arrows, and presumably, modified health and resistances.

“We’re now giving the player the opportunity to go into a space and choose their own path. Where we take you across the ledge of the B-52 bomber, that’s a tutorial,” Developer Crystal Dynamics said to the magazine.

Once you move away from the plane, everything is basically open, dynamic traversal where the player has the freedom to roam around a jump from location to location with ease.

As for the story, that will still follow a regular, scripted path, CD confirmed.

There is linearity to the story – you have to go from point A to point B – but there’s junctions in between where we want the player to feel like they’re real explorers,” said Crystal Dynamics.

It’s most certainly not your regular Tomb Raider game so far, as Crystal Dynamics has revamped Lara for a new decade in gaming. Whether or not these changes actually make the game worth playing though, will only be answered next year, when Tomb Raider releases.
