A future suburb called Arcosur in northeast Spain is under construction at the moment. The nice thing about a new suburb is that you get to name its streets, and the future residents of Arcosur put up an online voting system to see what names they should go with.

There are 58 roads planned for the suburb. According to the president of the Arcosur Neighbourhood Association, 12 out of those 58 will be named after videogame characters. Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. was the first to be honoured and the street plaque was unveiled yesterday. Which other games are getting streets named after them?

Obviously, Nintendo’s other huge franchise, The Legend of Zelda, will also be getting a street. So will Sonic the Hedgehog and Space Invaders.

Videogame names won over the more traditional options for street names in the online poll. Perhaps this is due to the fact that the neighbourhood is being constructed for young people starting out in life, with the average age of its residents being 25-30 years. Many of them say that they grew up with games and as such want the pastime to be represented in their new suburb.

Earlier this year, the town of Derby in England named a street Lara Croft Way in honour of Tomb Raider’s leading lady, who was designed by Core Design; Core’s offices are found in Derby. Ten bucks says the market value of house number 69 Lara Croft Way has since quadrupled in value. Giggidy.

Why can’t our government change street names to videogame characters instead of boring politicians? Come on JZ, we want a street named after Super Meat Boy or Dr. Fetus.
