Most Unreal Engine 4 games are new IP

The 8th generation of consoles is off to a bit of a slow start, and it seems for a while yet that all we’ll be getting is sequels, reboots and rehashes. It’s very different from the previous generation, which spawned a wealth of great new IP, like Uncharted, Gears of War, Mass effect and countless others. Don’t worry, the new IP is coming. According to Epic, most of the games being made with their shiny new Unreal Engine 4 are new properties.

Speaking to Edge (via CVG), Epic’s Mike Gamble told the magazine that the split of games being developed using Unreal Engine 4 was “at least 50/50,?  adding “If not 70/30 in favour of new stuff.”

The reason you’re seeing so many sequels and cross-generation ports is that the companies involved are using those “safe” games to fund new properties.

“There’s a lot of buffering. A lot of studios are doing a franchise iteration and a new IP,” he said.

When will we start hearing about all of these brand new games, then? Not this year, unfortunately – so expect a lot more sequels and cross-gen ports for the next while.

“It’ll happen this year, toward the Christmas period. Knowing the games that are in development, there are some crackers. The first quarter of 2015 is also where a lot of them seem to be aiming,” he said.

“This year there seems to be a lot of cross-gen, but that’s publishers and developers being safe, isn’t it? It’s still a good revenue stream.”

The first UE4 game out of the gate will likely be Epic’s own co-op survival sandbox Fortnite, which seems a bit like Minecraft-meets-Team Fortress. I also suspect that a certain new Gears of War game will be made using the engine. If the Xbox One is up to the task of rendering that many muscles.

With the advancement in technology video games are becoming more attractive. Sound quality and graphics of recent video games are far better than previous one.
