While I can’t think of a single person who really yearns for the return of games made using digitised actors – old-age gems such as Pitfighter, Mortal Kombat and Naughty Dog’s godawful MK rip-off Way of the Warrior – it seems one company wants to return to this not-quite-golden-age. Indie developer Galloping Ghost has been working on Dark Presence ; An arcade-bound, ultra violent fighting game in the vein of the original Mortal Kombat trilogy.
The game features the 1080p high-definition greenscreen work of “actors†(who presumably weren’t even good enough for soft-core porn), to the tune of 150,000 frames of animation. The game will apparently also have context-sensitive finishing moves – for a total of 437 gruesome ways to die.
While I expect this game – if it’s real and not some elaborate joke – to be covered with a thick layer of cheese and be absolutely awful, I really want to play – if only to placate the rose-tinted nostaliga that it invokes.
Check the screens after the Jump, giggle a bit, and then come to the conclusion that it’s a GOOD THING games aren’t made like this anymore.
One of the inherent problems with motion-captured digitised graphics is that the lighting on the actors is static – meaning that they always look a little out of place. Seems they haven’t managed to clear that particular hurdle just yet as attested by these screens.
you can find out more about the game at the official site here.

Does that guy in the last pic (on the right) have his underwear over his face? Could that possibly be one of the other guy’s finishing moves??? 😈
