More info on Tom Clancy’s The Division

In many ways, The Division is a lot like that other very hyped always online game about shooting things. I think, however, that its apocalyptic setting and hard-core branching RPG structures will certainly appeal to me more that other game we shan’t mention.

Like that game, even though it’s a perpetually online game, it’s something you can play alone – but it’s something you won’t want to. It’s best played with other humans, as you’ll be relying on tech, gadgets and tactics to get ahead.

Set in a a broken New York after a pandemic has wiped much of the population out, you’ll play as one of the survivors; one of the clean-up agents responsible with bringing the city back to life.

I’ve seen it up close and its richly detailed and beautiful. As with many games of its ilk, great chunks of the narrative are told told through emergent game play and the environment; fresh corpses piled up, abandoned homes, the world littered with debris, messages on walls. The narrative is  also partially spun by an echo device, which shows memories of a place in 3D. At least it’s not through Grimoire cards that have to be accessed outside of the game, right?

It plays much like an MMO; you’ll band together with a few other players and take on other groups within the world. My one hope is that with its mechanics in place it manages to tell a good story. Without that, the great big city they’ve built; a sprawling urban jungle, is all for naught.

I’m still quite excited for the game, even if I’ve learned to temper expectations this year. Just about every major, hyped-up game released this year  has been a disappointment in some way or another. The Division is only out in 2015 – so maybe it’ll escape that curse.

Here’s a look at a recent presentation of the game out of this year’s EGX. It doesn’t show much new in the way of footage, but you’ll likely gain a little more insight in to the game.

And here’s a new trailer for the thing, also from EGX.

All good and well yes, BUT, here are some questions:

    – Will it have PROPER controls? (YES UBISOFT, I mean it!!!)
    – Will it be a PROPER version on EACH platform?
    – How will the MMO aspect work? Hosted servers? And if so, WILL we have a PROPER connection here in good ol’ RSA?
    – Will you DLC the poop out of this?
    – Will you PROPERLY QUALITY test it?

If all above issues are addressed, you will have a sale from my side, if not, then I’m afraid now matter how awesome it looks, I’m not climbing on the train, chooo chooooooo

What it will have is U-Play, impossible PC installation code, bugs, patches, updates, Overhype AKA Watchdogs, lots of DLC Poop…

If we have not learnt by now then lets carry on with this DRM crap.

High Hopes is the best final song ever made. It’s even better, because David Glimour even said it was the last song he wrote, so they didn’t just put it there last.

I hope that shot of the subway entrance / stairs means the NY underground (subways, sewers, etc.) is fully fleshed out and accessible. One of my favorite things about Fallout 3’s post-apocalyptic DC was how you could use the metro to quickly move around, avoiding enemies (except all those fookin’ ghouls…).

The only game that would make me to cry, if it flops. I hope it lives up to it’s “whatever that makes it work”.
