Well, two of them are at least; Ron Gilbert has just joined Tim Schafer’s development studio Double Fine Productions, and the two are currently busy on something new.

Both are veteran game designers and last worked together at LucasArts nearly twenty years ago when they created The Secret of Monkey Island as well as Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge. Since then both have been in contact and both have developed a string of titles on their own; Tim Schafer recently produced Brütal Legend, and Ron Gilbert has kept himself busy with recent titles like DeathSpank.

But what are the two working on now?

During their interview with Kotaku, Gilbert and Schafer kept expectedly mum on what they’re currently toying with. The project seems to be primarily something that Gilbert has been “battling around for many, many years”. Now that the two are on the project together, it’s hoped that things will start rolling along nicely, “I’m really horrible working at home,” Gilbert said, “all I do is other things rather than work”. This realisation led him to borrowing office space at Double Fine Productions. Once there, it was only a matter of time before Shafer offered him a permanent position.

So can we expect another Monkey Island game? Not likely because LucasArts still owns the rights to the Monkey Island IP. What the two could say about their new game is that “Fans of those old adventure games will like it”. Gilbert also promises that the game will be funny and have characters that are cared about.

How far along is the new project? It doesn’t even have a publisher yet. In fact, it hasn’t even been pitched at a publisher, but the two are mere days away from putting the idea forward to companies. Which publisher will pick up their new idea remains to be seen, but I’m guessing it won’t be Activision.
