Mojang and Bethesda settle "Scrolls" dispute

You might recall that Mojang, the guys behind Minecraft were busy with their next game, which they wanted to call Scrolls, until Bethesda’s lawyers not so politely asked them to stop. The reason?

According to Bethesda the name was too similar to its established “Elder Scrolls” series, and figured people would get confused – even though Mojang’s Scrolls would be a completely different sort of game.

The two companies have now reached a settlement, and Mojang will be able to use the name it intended. Mojang has, however, relinquished the game’s Trademark, and won;t be able to use the Scrolls name for a game that’s in any way similar to those bearing the “Elder Scrolls” name.

"The settlement is that we give them the trademark, get to keep the name, and won’t make an Elder Scrolls competitor using the name," Markus “Notch” Persson said on Twitter.

Funny, because those are exactly the terms Persson suggested before this all went to court. So a win for Mojang, but a bigger win for the lawyers on both sides who’ve profited over a little posturing.
