MLG Championship first eSports use of COD: Ghosts

Cod mlg

Kicking off today in Columbus, Ohio, Major League Gaming (MLG) is hosting a championship using two major franchises: COD and DOTA. With the game only released earlier this month, I wonder how much time teams have had to hone their skills.

The prize pools are looking pretty good – COD: Ghosts has a $50 000 prize pool with $20 000 going to the 1st place winners. Dota 2’s prize pool is over $110 000, and fans can add to that prize pool by buying the MLG Championship Bundle – MLG is certainly taking a page from The International’s playbook on that one. I’m definitely excited to see Dota juggernauts Na’Vi going up against Alliance, Evil Geniuses, Team Liquid and DK again. Definitely some fun Dota to watch this weekend. You can watch the live broadcasts over at MLG, or through Dota TV where applicable.

It is a bit surprising to me that COD: Ghsots will be played on Xbox 360, though. You would think that they would want it played on next-generation consoles, or maybe PC? It actually makes me wonder how quickly we’ll see the shift to Xbox One or PS4 usage at eSports competitions. Pro-athletes will need to hone new skills to adapt to changes on next generation platforms – this may even shake up some international standings. Of course, local eSports will still need quite some time before next generation consoles can even be considered for use in tournaments. Will this put our local athletes at a disadvantage?

I wonder if the pro gaming teams will be sponsored next gen console or if they will have to buy them themselves?
