Minecraft for charity

MineThon 3 is like a reality TV gaming event to raise money for a good cause.  It’s played for 72 hours live on Twitch TV, and all the proceeds go to the AbleGamers Charity.

The AbleGamers Foundation is focused on gamers with disabilities – they donate custom, accessible equipment such as controllers and keyboards.  As they explain:

Video games allow individuals with disabilities to experience situations that may be difficult or limited in the real world, provide social networking opportunities to maintain mental and emotional health, and participate in one of the world’s largest pastimes.

With a three-step approach, AbleGamers works and advocates on behalf of the disability community to increase the accessibility of video games and to achieve further inclusion by those who need special considerations.

This year’s MineThon will go live 2 August at 8pm local time.  Donations are processed through PayPal, and all funds go directly to AbleGamers.  So, these five crazy guys will play 72 hours of non-stop Minecraft to raise money for a good cause.  Donors can win Minecraft prizes such as T-Shirts, Creeper etched drinking glasses and Creeper beanies.  If you donate $15 or more you’ll be automatically added to the MineThon 3 Minecraft Server white list, while those who donate $20 or more will receive additional server benefits. You can check out all the info here.

I’m assuming that they will only accept funds during the 72 hours – as of yet I don’t see any place on their site where you can throw money at them.  But please do, because it’s Minecraft for a good cause!  At the very least, go play with them to help them maintain some semblance of sanity.

The sad part is, with the amount of Let’s Plays I watch, 72 hours should be easy.

That’s some serious dedication for a good cause, I don’t even like keeping my eyes open for 20 hours.

Sadly this is not the type of exposure that gaming gets in mainstream media 🙁

Sadly no. They only focus on the bad. But that’s news in general. Bad news sells unfortunately

That was me and my wife yesterday… I start studying and then got stuff to do, 2 and a half hours later I still hadn’t done any studying… so started up MineCraft saying “oh well, so much for studying today”.

        I wasn’t very popular hehehe
