Microsoft would love No Man’s Sky on Xbox One

No Man’s Sky has been hiding recently, but that doesn’t mean it’s fallen off the radar as one of this year’s most anticipated titles. The game is launching exclusively for PS4 first, with a PC release slated for a later time. An Xbox One launch, however, doesn’t seem to be in development – and it’s made Microsoft quite sad.

Speaking on the latest Inner Circle podcast, ID@Xbox director Chris Charla expressed his fascination with Hello Games’ space sim, and stated that he’d love to see it come to Xbox One in the future. That decision is completely up to the developers though, and Charla suggests that Microsoft’s parity clause with regards to independent games might have scared them off from the start. Unsurprisingly, Charla invites developers to talk with Microsoft – even if that means pretending the clause doesn’t exist at all.

“If you’re worried about policies,” he said, “we try to be really easy to get in touch with. When we talk to developers, we try to be really transparent. Don’t assume that something you read on Neogaf is our policy, just talk to us.”

The parity clause has been stretched, broken and put back together many times since inception, but the core idea still remains. Microsoft want games on the Xbox One first, or at the very least at the same time as everyone else. Stuff like that tends to push developers away when simultaneous launches aren’t a possibility – even if Microsoft says they are willing to cater for special cases.

“If it’s a situation where a developer needs to ship serially on consoles because they don’t have the resources to simultaneously ship, we totally get that. It’s no problem. Our goal is to make sure that if a developer wants to ship their game on Xbox one, that they can ship their game on Xbox One.”

Except, that’s not the goal when a game is receiving funding for launching exclusively on another platform. Such is the case with No Man’s Sky, which received some sort of remuneration for lunching exclusively on PS4 first. In these cases, Microsoft wants something unique to their platform if they’re going to allow it, which is a tough sell if they’re the ones actually hunting for the game in question. It’s even more ridiculous when you consider that Microsoft isn’t offering anything else in return, other than a spot on their console.

So it’s clear that No Man’s Sky will have to do something extra special just to appear on the Xbox One, regardless of Microsoft actually wanting it in the first place. But hey, at least Elite: Dangerous is coming soon.

If they want it on Xbox One, why not just let the streaming work both ways between XB1 and PC, problem solved.

Why do I think he wouldn’t be saying any of that “we’re so reasonable” stuff if it wasn’t a hotly anticipated title?

This is ridiculous… Their policy is simply ridiculous… It basically comes down to freely promoting their product with your game… how do you put a policy like that together, especially if your product is not up to scratch to that of the competition… We’ve all witnessed the difference between the two consoles, why the hell would I want to develop a product on your platform and be constrained by some stupid clause where I could easily do it on a platform that allows me to do what I want, whenever I want…. Absolute nonsense….

Because they know their console is the lowest denominator between the two. Thats what happens when you design your console to be a Media hub first and gaming console second..

Whaah? I was referring to Microsoft and yes, it is also because of some really poorly executed executive decisions that they retrenched a crapload of people around the globe, one of those decisions was that of implementing the above mentioned policy…

          • Pieter Kruger

            March 31, 2015 at 13:36

Wait what? Now you’re jumping on the Microsoft hate wagon? How come this policy led to jobs being lost?

          • Greylingad

            March 31, 2015 at 13:47

Nope, I’ve been on the MS hate wagon this whole time… The jobs lost were that of the marketing teams etc. when the XBone had just launched, they fired a lot of people… The policy was issued with the launch, snowball effect, eventually when devs looked at it they didn’t want to be restricted to said policy so most of them went for an alternative route( i.e. PC etc.) with the effect of an expected income from selling indie games (on the XBone) not being produced, hence job losses… Does it make a little bit more sense now?

And Sony designed their console to be a game machine first right ?, no didn’t think so hardly any AAA titles but they make a hell of a lot of money from their MEDIA by not allowing you to play any of your own but having to rent theirs.

Seems like some people have brain drain and forget that the PS4 Does have media first the problem is you have to pay for everything, on the Xbox One you can play All your media, movies, music etc for free including using DNLA and up to 16 TB on two USB hard drives.

Yes! that’s quite amazing and all, but I have a PC for that very function… If I want a gaming console, I’d buy one(PS4), I really don’t like Microsoft’s crowbarring tactics… They force things into the market that eventually fail horribly… I personally don’t like it because what’s to stop them from shovelling poop into our faces, because it’s something we’ll use in future…No thanks…

Yup Sony did indeed go gaming first. Why last genm they tried the media and smug ass arrogant tactics and it BIT them SQUARELY in the ass! PS4 does games first then media. You have any idea how big Sony’s gaming catalog is, alot bigger than what we got on Xbox.

Let me REFRESH your memory: All those fuckin retarded PAYWALLS, Microsoft did that. DRM, well again Microsoft, oh lets not forget the NDAs they had on their system. Three big strikes there.

Funny thing is, all shit we gave Sony last gen, looks like the JOKES are on us. Me personally i’m going to where the games are. PC and PS4.

Fact: Game will still look gorgeous on Xbox One and you cannot expect a developer to re code it’s game with DX12 just before launch to hit 1080 on Xbox One! Could it be done later, definitely! Will it still matter then, don’t think so!
