Microsoft: People love Kinect!

Last month, Microsoft announced that you’d be able to purchase an Xbox One without their silly motion-sensing peripheral bundled with it. This has resulted in far more people being quite excited about the prospects of getting an Xbox One. That, coupled with the derision directed at Kinect lead to an obvious conclusion; people hate the damned thing.  Microsoft says that’s not the case.

Speaking with GamesIndustry International, Microsoft Xbox boss Phil Spencer asserted that consumers love Kinect.

"We see millions and millions of people using Kinect today. We’ve had over a billion voice commands used. The use of Kinect in people’s homes is incredibly high,” he asserted.

“And because people are continuing to use it, it’s an area we’re going to continue to invest, in terms of making the experience better. And I think that makes building games in that environment even better. Consumers love the device; they love the experience.

He’s convinced that people will end up buying Kinect on its own after they’ve bought the standalone console.

“They’ll buy it. They’ll either buy it at launch when they buy their console, or they’ll be able to buy it after the $399 console; they’ll pick it up and add it on later. And we’ll continue to make sure that experience is great."

Honestly, I think Kinect is becoming an increasingly hard sell, and with Microsoft itself extricating the Xbox One from Kinect, it’ll be tougher still. At its E3 conference, Microsoft showed off exactly 0 games that utilise the peripheral exclusively – which perhaps signals that support for the peripheral is dwindling. Spencer also denies this.

“A Kinect game relies on the successful Xbox One installed base," Spencer said. "I need to, as the head of Xbox, make sure that we’ve got a platform and a product offering that millions of consumers will love, and I stay focused on that. That’s where I’m at now. We’ll also continue to evolve what Kinect can do.”

People love Kinect?

They need to open the Kinect to a wider audience.

If they made it compatible with the PC, PS4 and Wii U they’d increase the number of sales by a whopping 10 units.
That’s like 4 times their current market.

Millions of commands you say? Probably coz people have to repeat the same command over and over before it recognises the command.

Apart from funny … that’s disturbing because of the vast quantity of kiddie voices … I knew CoD was bad – but hell’s teeth – the player base in that vid seems to be made up solely of children too young to be playing that game (according to the age guidelines)

I want one. When my daughter is a little older, say 1.5 years or something, I think her interacting with Kinectimals or whatever would be very, very cool. We still go outside, balance in life and all that before I get slapped

This just goes to show that Microsoft is not selling the Xbox One to gamers. It still makes me wonder how Microsoft can stop focusing on games for their video game console and focus so much on the Kinect. They are trying so hard to get this damn Kinect into people’s houses. It just makes me wonder what the real purpose for this fucking Kinect is, because it’s not about gaming, and it’s not about gaming, it needs to fuck off. They are giving me so much reason to put my tin foil hat on.

Don’t support DRM. Don’t support Kinect to NSA.

Well they have mentioned that before. Like if you rent or buy a movie from Xbox Live only a certain amount of people are “allowed” to watch the movie and if Kinect sees that there are too many people watching the movie it will turn off the movie.

But the way they are so focused on this Kinect, the purpose goes deeper than that, I am sure of it.

Yeah, I’m not believing any of this for a second. If the Kinect wasn’t the only efficient way to record gameplay clips to the One DVR, I’d have never plugged it in once.

Plus, acknowledging my own mistake, if a consumer were smart, they wouldn’t buy an Xbox One at all, much less a Kinect for it later.

“A Kinect game relies on the successful Xbox One installed base,”

That line of thinking doesn’t really work when future sales will no longer guarantee a Kinect for every XBO in the install base.
