Borderlands (5)

Is the world ready for Borderlands 3? Probably not. But is it ready for an interquel, dubbed Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel? The answer to that, is a definitive maybe. The curtain was finally pulled open yesterday on the new game that is being developed by 2K Australia. Here’s what you can expect to find in the missing chapter of Borderlands.

Characters

Borderlands (1)Borderlands (2)Borderlands (3)Borderlands (4)

You’ve got four new characters and classes to play with in the pre-sequel. Athena the Gladiator, who has unique shield abilities that can absorb and redirect damage with Kinetic Aspis, Wilhelm the Enforcer whose upgrades slowly construct a robotic shell around him, Nisha the Lawbringer who eventually pops up as the sheriff of Lynchwood and Claptrap the Fragtrap.

Yep, that’s right, you can finally play as the loveable Borderlands mascot. Borderlands 2 protagonist Handsome Jack will also be present, but in a different role that sets up his eventual rise to power in the Hyperion corporation. You’ll be on his side during the events if the interquel.

Borderlands (6)

“We have playable characters that start as kind of psychopathic but fun and then end up in places where they were really aggressively wanting to stay with Jack so they could kill more innocent people and get paid for it,” writer Anthony Burch explained to Kotaku.

Timeline

Confirmed: You’ll be firing guns in lunar space after Borderlands 1, but before Borderlands 2. This is essentially the story of the rise of Handsome Jack.

Location

Borderlands (4)

You’ll be running around the moon of Pandora, in a low-gravity environment that presents new gameplay challenges. For instance, jumps will be higher, while a well-timed explosive attack can actually send enemies into orbit. The big change however, is that you have a new resource that you have to keep an eye on: Your oxygen.

Previews describe the new health bar as a diminishing asset, that will need to be replenished lest you die a horrible death. While the idea of a time-sensitive location within which to shoot up the moon doesn’t sound appealing, Gearbox says that these stages are smaller in design and spaced out during the game.

Borderlands (3)

Oxygen tanks do have some benefits however. They unlock new movesets, which allow you to hover, slide, double-jump and butt-slam your way across the moon. The kit itself can be upgraded, allowing you to deal extra damage out your ass.

Guns

Borderlands (1)

Borderlands wouldn’t be complete without guns. Hell, the second amendment is what makes the game so popular in the first place. The pre-sequel will feature plenty of new weapons, including a laser class, and a freezing elemental attack that can slow down enemies. Who you can then shatter-punch.

When?

Borderlands (2)

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is out in the US of A fall, on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

  • Hammersteyn

The graphics could look like that on a PS4, not PS3 though. Wheres the love!

    • Alien Emperor Trevor

He’s quoted as saying it’s not being released on next-gen because they sold more copies of B2 than they’ve sold next-gen consoles combined. (or something close enough to that)

      • Hammersteyn

Right, but they can still release it on PS4 and PS3. Hell B2 is even coming to Vita.

        • Alien Emperor Trevor

          It is coming to PS3.

          • Hammersteyn

I know, that’s why I made the graphics comparison with the PS4

    • Matthew Holliday

borderlands wasnt really that hardware intensive anyway.
theyr using the same engine, so hardware requirements arent much higher than borderlands 2.
would be wasted on a PS4, but a PS4 port wont really take that much work anyway, so i wouldnt rule it out.

      • Hammersteyn

Yeah but still, if you look at the srceen shots above and compare it to B2 on the PS3 you would notice a difference

        • Jeff

Well, it probably wouldn’t look that good on the PS4 either, since I’m not sure how well the PS4 handles stuff like anti-aliasing, PhysX, advanced lighting, etc…

  • Alien Emperor Trevor

Maybe I’m just Borderlands’d out, but I just don’t feel interested in this. The depleting health/oxygen thing doesn’t appeal to me either – forces you to play a certain way.

    • Jedi JJ

I agree completely. Hate it when you can’t just play it your way. And I completely out-borderlands’d myself too.

    • Hammersteyn

Smells like Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes

  • Black Mage [Umar]

    I can’t say I’m excited about this……

  • BMXWufam

I hope they keep that infinite ammo glitch. Made the game stupid fun.

  • Matthew Holliday

    Everyone so pesimistic.
Im down for some shootin’ n lootin’

    • geelslang

I didnt overplay borderlands 2 and none of its dlc, so like you say, Im also ready for some more shooting and lootin.

    • Borderlands warlord

I’m with you these guys don’t get it there are oxygen refill stations every 50 ft on there previews of the game the oxygen is so you can fight with a new style

  • Kensei Seraph

Well I’m pretty excited about this.
Granted I never played Borderlands 2 much (I forgot to back up my save before formatting my PC).

  • KingKappie

I am looking forward to this game

  • Rince

    I want lasers!

  • hairyknees

    FIRE THE LASER BEAMS!

  • JHN

I love the borderlands franchise but I am worried about this one,

  • Purple_Dragon

I love Borderlands but I just don’t get excited for this game. Bit strange, should be jumping for joy.

It just feels a bit like a saints row 4.

  • Ondai

LOL at the thought of the skins/heads for Claptrap x’D

  • AmmoRegen

They’d better have an ammo regeneration thing. That is all.
