Mass Effect 3 will let you take Earth back from the reapers – and it’s coming in two weeks. The game’s getting Day One DLC in the form of a campaign called “From Ashes” which asks players to “unearth lost secrets of the past” and, like the first day DLC from Mass Effect 2, allows you to enlist a new squad member.
Problem is, this time it’s not free – unless you buy the collector’s edition of the game.
“We’re happy to confirm that Mass Effect 3: From Ashes DLC will be available at launch for all platforms. For those of you who have purchased the N7 Collector’s Edition (including the PC Digital Deluxe Edition), you will get this content at no extra charge. We’ll have a lot more details for you later this week,” said Bioware’s Michael Gamble of the DLC, information on which was recently leaked.
Those who buy the standard edition of the game will have to purchase the extra content for 800 MS points, or $9.99. Mass Effect 2 utilised an online pass through the Cerberus network that gave new buyers extra content for free. This time around, the online pass unlocks the games new multiplayer component.
Mass Effect producer Casey Hudson took to Twitter to try stem the tide of angry gamers who’ve not managed to order the coveted collector’s edition – by saying that the DLC wasn’t core content ripped out of the game, but rather new content made after the game was done.
“DLC has fast [certification] and no [manufacturing], so if a team works very hard, they can get a DLC done in time to enjoy it with your 1st playthrough on day one. On ME3, content creators completed the game in January and moved onto the ‘From Ashes’ DLC, free with the [Collector’s Edition] or you can buy separately,” he said.
