Ah yes, the open seas! The vast openness always promises adventure, and sometimes even treasure if you’re one eyed and say YAAARGH all the time. Velvet Sundown is a social multiplayer and free to play role-playing game that takes place on a luxury yacht, and when we heard about it, we just had to try it out!
We kicked off things with the tutorial, which was pretty simple and literally took less than a minute to complete. You are told how to move around, and how to interact with people (cardboard cut-outs in this scenario, because real people are scary).
Navigating the main menu, it’s clear that there is only one scenario available. The others were completely locked and only available to premium members. From what I could understand, these differ from the free mode in scenery, player cap, as well as objectives. No matter, I’m a green lad searching for adventure! I chose the freemium path.
You are assigned a random character, with a selection of items and various objectives. The goal of the game is to navigate the yacht and fulfil these tasks. Doing most of them requires actually interacting with the other crew, all played by other players. Typing in game actually causes your character to verbalise it using text-to-speech, which can be genuinely funny.
The rest of it? Well, I could sit here for days typing up all the different conspiracies I uncovered, the betrayals I experienced and… dammit people, leave Malik alone! Seriously, see for yourself.
I will be honest, as bad as it was, I really had some good laughs. There are some real idiots though, so if you take offence easily, steer away and sail off in the opposite direction. Otherwise, for a mere 700mb download on Steam, you can experience this craziness for yourself.
