“PC gaming is dead!” – a claim that was made all those years ago when consoles saw a steep rise in popularity, and a claim that still gets made today by the nayest of naysayers. The truth is, no platform in gaming is really dead – especially not PC.

This year further proved that sentiment. Some truly stellar titles landed on PC this year, but which one stood out the most?

Heroes of the Storm

OMG

On the surface, Heroes of the Storm seems shallow, and far too casual to be enjoyed by the even the most hardcore of gamers. Yet after enough time with it, it’s clear that Blizzard’s age-old mythos continues to hold true: the MOBA is easy to pick up, but difficult to master.

Learning to play a hero for example, may not be the most difficult thing to do, but finding out exactly what talents to take, and what team composition suits that hero best, is where the real depth of the game shines through. Not only that, there are a plethora of different battlegrounds to explore and understand too, and a ton of different map strategies to explore.

It all sounds a bit overwhelming, but somehow, Blizzard have made the game accessible to everybody. It also happens to be entirely free-to-play, unless of course you’re looking to buy a cosmetic or two, in which case some cold hard cash is needed.

Overall, Heroes of the Storm is a game that can be picked up and enjoyed by anybody. For us, it is the best PC game of 2015!

Honourable mentions

Heroes of the Storm is not the only great title that came out this year however. Here are some others that certainly deserve some love too…

  • Homeworld: Remastered
  • StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void
  • Stasis
  • Broforce
  • Pillars of Eternity

Which of the above is your favourite? Do you agree with Heroes of the Storm being the top pick?

  1. Wow. Homeworld remastered gets an honourable mention.
That game is just so epic. I seriously need to consider getting that remaster.
Pillars of Eternity looks epic and Heroes of the Storm really isn’t my type of game, but it looks decent. And clearly everyone who plays it loves it.

These all look fairly weak. I played POE and enjoyed it for a while then it got a bit boring. Looks like XCOM 2 will walk away with the title next year.

I would have put Prison Architect in this category (as a mention), or on the indie one actually. That’s a pretty damn fun game.

I’m surprised he didn’t try and sneak DOTA in here anyway and use it’s updates and content to let “qualify” for a 2015 game.

In all fairness though, I’ve played it and it’s fun commanding known characters from other Blizzard games around. Especially Raynor or the Monk from Diablo 3 or even Diablo himself.

We played quite a few fun mods on SC2 a few years back. Good fun.

Plus the game is free and any character you desire can be unlocked through grinding, except the cosmetics.

    Grey Goo.
    That seriously needs to recognised.
They don’t make RTS games like that anymore, and the CGI was mind blowingly awesome.
I loved it. The campaign was a bit short, but the skirmish is many hours of fun, with some properly challenging AI too.

        I promise!
No one else I know owns the game…probably because the name is a bit misleading to some…but if you don’t know what grey goo is, do some wikipedia reading. And the game captures it well enough.

I was quietly sitting and killing a couple of million zerg last night. When the thought crossed my mind. Why are the other developers so totally incapable of realizing that quality will always beat quantity. Blizzard nails it every time without fail.
