Ladies and gentlemen! The following bout is scheduled for one fall, and is for the Lazygamer 2015 best fighting game championship! Are you ready? Are you ready? LET’S GET IT ON! MY GOD KING IT’S ALREADY OVER! WE HAVE A NEW CHAMP! A NEW CHAMP!

Mortal Kombat X

MortalKombatX_Scorpion

This one was a no-brainer, just like the aftermath of a Raiden fatality. Mortal Kombat was back this year and more vicious than ever. With tighter gameplay, an expanded roster and gory graphics that made fatalities seem too real at times, Mortal Kombat X felt like a proper sequel that built on the foundations of the soft reboot of the 2011 game.

But beyond that, Mortal Kombat X was also built to last. With the eSports scene growing, Mortal Kombat X featured a far more variable system of throwing punches, a trio of styles per character that would ensure matches would be more than just Sektor and Scorpion juggle-festivals. It also had a rather damn good story, something rarely seen in any fisticuffs game on the market.

With new moves, a new generation and a new direction, Mortal Kombat X was the clear winner this year.

Honourable Mentions

Mortal Kombat X didn’t have a lot of competition this year, which was another reason for it sealing the deal. Dragon Ball XenoVerse powered up to over 9000 when it tore the timeline a new one and gave players a fresh perspective from which to interact with their favourite moments from the Son Goku saga. Dead or Alive 5: Last Round was easily the definitive current-gen version of a last-generation game, but something that fans were already tired of.

And then there was WWE 2K16, a game which had nowhere to go but up after WWE 2K15 failed on multiple levels last year. Not a lot of competition, but expect all that to change next year when the latest crop of fighters emerge.

Well, it was released in 2013 – and the DLC doesn’t count.

KI is a lot of fun but let us face it MK kind of wins hands down here. But it deserves a mention at least.

For me MK wins out of sheer lack of competition. MK has access to the most amazing lore, yet the story was weak at best. Almost like it was added as an afterthought. New kids on the block felt out of place. Microtransactions was added this year and I bet more than a few people spent cash on the unlock everything in the Krypt option. Throw in some afterthought DLC characters, like a mutilated Alien/Baraka hybrid and a ninja combination of Cyrex,Sektor and Smoke(because ideas are running out) and you have a shell of it’s former self. Especially when you look at the PC port. I’ve played every single MK game to date and this one ranks below MK4 in my book.

The game felt like a corporate product. It almost felt like Ed Boon was absent during the development.

I disagree. Whilst I think WWE should have won, you are banging the nails into the coffinof a great game via it’s DLC and microtransactions.
I bought two of the extra characters, Jason Voorhees and The Predator. Those are some great fighters on their own. And as a fan of Friday the 13th flicks and Predator, they have done those two characters justice. Your complaint about the Krypt is also a bit left of centre. You do not have to purchase the KRypt unlockables. If you want to you can.
As to story: No matter what, any MK game will always be about there is a tournament and someone has to win it, because reasons. The fate of the world hangs in the balance, but I gotta first murder my way through a series of combatants so I can challenge the all evil, destroy him and then win my prize.
SPOILER ALERT! And the glorious ending of Jason Voorhees… Strangling Liu Kang with his own entrails?

No you don’t have to purchase unlock everything. Problem is they made it a lot harder to unlock everything in the Krypt so that people might feel the need to give up. Also easy fatalities? WTF is that shit. Fatalities were never that hard to do to begin with, except maybe MK2 and possibly MK3. But now you can buy little tokens to help you through. They can do a lot better with the story. It doesn’t always need to be a tournament. It doesn’t even need to be a fighting game. Shaolin Monks was a classic. Yay Jason Voorhees and The Predator, maybe next time they’ll had Michael Myers and Mike Myers.

I’ll bang every nail I have, or must I just change with the times. Maybe I should? Maybe I should stop commenting as well because all I seemingly do these days is post silly gifs and bitch and moan about publishers nickel and diming us. WB has done the same thing with Shadow of Mordor, Batman AK and Mad Max but that’s just the norm so lets all deal with it and spend that extra R500 and a fucking season pass because everything that was good and pure in gaming as with MK is up for sale to be exploited.

Dude come on. Again, easy fatalities was not forced upon you. And Shaolin Monks was not a tourney based fighting game if I remember correctly.
Look, I agree on the whole nickel and diming thing. Some of the DLC out there is utter hogwash to begin with. (Like Easy Fatalities)
But out of the box (Gaming politics be damned) MK X was/is a very cool fighting game.

The point he is making, or getting across to me, is that games in general, and existing franchises, is fucking over the consumer more than ever. The year has been long and next year he’ll be all positive again, as will most of us 😀
